Neptonics trigger mechanism

Hello everyone, newbee here. Just got back from an awesome trip in Baja and met a spear fisherman who has been around for a long time. Howard Gokey Dewey Jr. The man. Anyways I copied his gun and came back to make my own then head down so he can show me the ropes in May when the tuna roll through. I can't for the life of me figure out how the side line release is put into the trigger with that one piece of threaded stock. Diagrams, discription anything would be better then nothing. I got a 2x6x70 " piece of solid teak and plan on making my gun about 63-64". Since I am poor and can only afford the hardware for one gun I thought this would be a good size. For up close shallow reef spots I figured I could just use one band, but the gun will accomidate up to 3 5/8" bands. I know that it is long to swing around fast but hey, work with what you got. Love all your guys's sites and gun builds. I think i went through 30 pages of gun build forums looking to the answer to my question and didn't find it. Initially I couldn't post for the longest time for some reason. I was also wondering if anyone made a jig so you know exactly the holes to drill for the two cross pins, and side line release trigger mechanism. Thanks so much for anyone who responds to my redicouls questions.:thumps:

Re: Neptonics trigger mechanism

Look at Prater's thread on gun build, I think the line release is on there. Prob. want to rip that wood and lam..... two three lam blanks?

I searched for his gun build but could not find it in the 30 + pages of forums, could you shoot me the link? I really need to know how the side line release works before I start to build my gun. I like to know how all components work before I start a project, have had too much stuff go wrong in the past just trying to wing it. thanks for the replies

Here's the thread. See post #39 for a view of the template. http://www.spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=55829&page=3

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that is a Poseidonsub mechanism that Prater used. Neptonics makes a trigger mechanism called the "Reef" model that is very similar and also has a resetting line release that works the same way. I "think" that Josh also offers offers a template to aid in positioning everything.

Re: Neptonics trigger mechanism

Read the entire post and it never show how he puts on the side line release into the actual trigger mechanism. You are right the trigger mechanism shown is not the same one I got. Mine is the neptonics reef 3 band trigger mechanism. Does anyone out there know how to put on the side line release?
Thanks kasey

Re: Neptonics trigger mechanism

The line release doesn't go "into" this mechanism, but "under it". Using the template to properly position the line release slot, the inboard end of the line release lever pushes against the little downward projecting tab on the bottom of the trigger mechanism. In the cocked position, the tab prevents it from moving. When the trigger is fired, the tab rotates and allows the line release to pivot and release the line. But the end of the line release lever remains in contact with the trigger tab. So when the trigger is cocked again, the tab again pushes the end of the line release lever to the proper position to load the line..

Re: Neptonics trigger mechanism

I also noticed the trigger mechanism I got is not rounded on the back like the new ones josh shows on his page. I must have gotten an older one. Does this make a big difference in ease of installation. Also someone had mentioned that I should rip the teak and then laminate it, why. Can I just use a solid piece of teak or does this not work well. :thumps:

Re: Neptonics trigger mechanism

Thanks for the response tim man, but I am completely dense when it comes to someone trying to explain something to me with out pictures or diagrams. I have been trying to reach Josh for about a week now and know he is on vacation. Just don't know why he wouldn't have a heads up page on his web-site showing how this is done. Your explanation although sounded really good makes no sense to me what so ever. Not your explanation, just my inability to understand it. Thanks for trying.

Re: Neptonics trigger mechanism

Thanks Phil, I would really appreciate that. Yes I have the reef neptonics trigger mechanism. I will be making an australian type gun design, with an open track on the top, I am really looking forward to building and using it to supplement my eating habbits, as well as my wallet. Also, what are band elevators and how are they used? Is it better to have a laminated type stock with multiple parts glued together? Howards gun was made from a piece of single stock and I loved how it looked. I have some pictures from Baja I will have to figure out how to post them, resize, ect. Howard told my wife and I where is hidden key was to his place in laguna. I took a bunch of pictures of his trophy kills he had hanging on the wall. One grouper that was a 190+ pounds. Thanks for all the help. :thumps:

The rounded back is the billet Tuna trigger pictured on Neptonics site:

The square mech is the Reef trigger and isn't up on his site:

I didn't do a side line release, but I did make a drill template out of 2" angle aluminum. I clamped the trigger in the angle and trilled out the pin holes, then used the template to drill the stock You could probably add marks to a jig to include the location for the side slot routed in the gun so it lines up with the slot on the mech, but the screw or pin inserted into the top of the blank will vary due to width of the blank. But you also could make an extra hole in the diy jig on the top for the line release pivot. Wait for Phil's pics as he knows more about that.

One thing I would add is to also have your spear shaft before you start cutting so you can be sure the trigger pocket lines up with the spear track (either open or enclosed).

The Poseidonsub trigger in Steven's build thread ( http://spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=55829 ) is very similar to the Neptonics Reef trigger. Starting with post #37 & 39 he shows how he cut the pocket with the template for the pins, and I think that jig had reference holes for the line release (post #49).

After that in post #52 he goes through the steps (very well documented too, I might add)

I then set my router table up with a 1/8" router bit that I have for cutting acrylic. It is a single flute design with an upcut spiral. It fits in the 1/8" pilot holes perfectly. I also took the bottom plate off my router table so I could watch the bit from underneath and use my featherboards to hold the gun down and against the fence. I then ran the bit from one hole to the other to get my finished slot cut.

I then assembled the trigger mechanism and the line release and test fired. I had to remove about 1/8" off the inside of the line release with the grinder so it would pivot freely in the gun

Boy, I'm glad Phil talked me into a bottom line release for my 58" gun. My gun's 2.25" wide and a side line drop wouldn't have worked as well. A lot of guys like Gil from ********** and Rich from Big Daddy are using recesses on their bigger guns at the release side of the gun to make them work right and simplify re-wrapping when loading. Nice guns they make, by the way.

My remote trigger uses a bottom line release and was simple to install. When the steel rod slides back the release in front of the trigger swings open and the mono leaves with the spear:

Re: Neptonics trigger mechanism

Just saw this thread, if neptonics offers a jig for the trigger you should get it. The line release just sits in the slot on the gun. The trigger mechanism has a tab that sets and releases in front of the actual trigger. the release just pivots back and forth in the wood. When the trigger is set with a shaft in place the line release cannot pivot because it is against that tab. As soon as the trigger is pulled the tab releases and allows the line release to swivel forward letting go of the shaft line. If I was home I would take some pics but it will be next week before I am back in Oklahoma.
