Thanks Mike... I was going to head to the Dana jetty with my kid to fish flatties.
I bet the jetty will be closed.
Cheers, Don

its at 310

redondo is chest high at best on the twice per hour 'big sets' (as of an hour ago)

hill will be surgy, but still doable i would think

at least for now

if it comes down to 295 again for any length of time you might be in for a long swim!

good luck

i was at the dana jetty 5 hours ago and it was flat as a board. you may be able to get in there for a bit before it picks up, but it may be wrecked. alot can change in 5 hours.

Mike,

I was out on Friday all day. We had 65++ foot of vis at my spot i dive at. It was like back in Hawaii.

Saturday i went back out with my big gun to shoot some of the more spooky fish and the vis died as the swells rolled in. By 4 -5 pm on saturday the vis was down to a pathetic 20-25 feet. With the top 5 feet of water having 10 feet of vis. As soon as you broke the surface haze you could get maybe 35-40 foot of vis. Minimal surge, but i was diving by myself in 35-40 feet of water.

Loads of Cuda, Big Sheeps, big Calicos, Sandies, and baitfish galore.

Vis kept going down as the day went on.

Thanks, I brought my boy up to Newport instead ....you could skip a rock.
We did some catch and release on some small flatties.
The best fun was watching him get his Ultra light spinning rig spooled by
a leopard shark. :D Luckily he got all his line back.
Cheers, Don

Re: Big Swell this Weekend in So Cal

I was one of 9 guys that got to experience the Channel Island weather onslaught.

I went out on the Peace Boat for a 3-day lobster dive on Thursday through Saturday. We dove Thursday and Friday at Talcott. On Friday, our first dive at 7am had some nice rollers coming in, but very diveable. On the second dive, the rollers had grown in size. Well, even though the rollers were now huge, we opted to do one last dive in this area. Why not? The area was being very productive for lobster. Most of us were down for about 30-35 minutes and surfaced where the boat should have been. I was diving with 2 other guys. The rollers were reaching 15ft or more, at 12-15 sec. intervals. We had a hard time finding the boat. When we found it, it was over 1/2 mile away. The boat had dragged anchor. Then several other guys starting popping up around us. There were 9 of us total. The safety sausages all came out and I started hitting the Dive Alert on my BCD inflater hose. It took them a little while to get to us in that little inflatable, as the water was extremely bad. As the inflatable picked 3 of us up, the Peace Boat pulled up their anchor and headed toward us to help in the pick up. Everyone got picked up and were safely back up on the boat within no time, although, some were pretty much shook up from the ordeal.

As everyone knows, shit can happen really fast at any time when you are out in that vast ocean. Not everyone has the privilege of experiencing these type of occurrences and having a chance to tell about it. When something like this happens, you hope and pray that everything will be alright and you will be saved. This is the 4th time I have been stranded in the middle of the water to some degree. I had plenty of air in my BCD and knew not to panic. But the first time it happened, I freaked. Some of the guys that were out there with me on this one were having their first experience with this felt the same way I did the first time it happened to me. Everyone worked together to keep each other calm.

I want to compliment the Peace Boat and the crew. Throughout this whole ordeal, they responded in one of the fastest and most professional manners I have had a chance to witness and/or be a part of. They did not waste any time. They realized the problem immediately when they saw divers surfacing too far away from the boat. YES, they were watching that closely. They were doing their job. 2 of the Divemasters jumped into action and took off after us in the inflatable, while the Peace lifted anchor to get to us. They did an outstanding job. Their only concern was getting all of us safely back on board. I take my hat off and kneel to the Capt. and Crew of the Peace Boat. Thank you for the excellent job. I am proud to say I am a diver of the Peace Boat. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-bounce016.gif http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy014.gif http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-score010.gif

Good to hear that everyone got back aboard safely.
That is a great boat w/a great crew for sure.I've had many great adventures on that, and the Truth over the years.
Yep when the si&% hits the fan,you have to keep a cool head, and NEVER panic.I'm sure we all have been there at some time or another...it's bound to happen to you if you spend enough time on the big pond.
Always nice to hear about a good crew being on thier toes.

Rosa is my favorite, but you really have to watch it up there if there is any big swell in the water.
