Old Giant Lingcod Picture

I always assumed that the lingcods in the pacific northwest have been gargantuan compared to those in CA for a long time, but this picture makes me think otherwise. Taken in 1900 in Cuffey's Cove (Mendocino), these look like lingcod significantly bigger than exist here today.

Anybody else have old stories, pics or insight on how common these huge fish were and what happened to them?

I think your picture showed what happened to them.... I believe their max weight as a species is ~125lbs. A couple of those look in that class. Thanks for posting that picture, that is almost unbelievable.

Where'd you get that pic from?

I remember seeing it posted before and could've sworn I saw it labelled as Pt.Arena. After some digging, here's the post reference:

They're definitely big fish, but hard to truly determine size without a more objective scale.

not doubting that they're big Lings, but the proportions seem tough to get an accurate gauging from. When were the size regs implemented? maybe they didn't have as much discretion on the smaller ones back then. And that may create an illusion near the larger ones. They(lings) are obviously much closer to the camera than the men in the background.

Still some massive slugs. I wonder the equipment used :toast:

It's in a book called "The Mendocino Coast" , subtitle : A Picture Tutorial.

Sounds cool, is there a lot of coastal stuff?
(sorry for the off-tangent questions)

Yeah there's a ton. I love the old north coast pictures, because they're largely all that's left of a bygone era. They serve as a reminder that the north coast is basically a ghost town compared to the thriving logging port it once was. Every river had a sawmill, and every cove was a sea port.

Proof that the spearboard push was alive and well 100 years before the internets
