Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
Hi everyone,
I am new to this website and spearfishing. I'm a long time land hunter and entered the water for the first time a few weeks ago at the urging of a friend that is a long time freediver. I've been a few times now, have shot a few fish, and have to say I love it. I was using as Apnea mask with a clear glass lens that fit Ok but when I went into the water it didn't fit as well as I had thought. I tried the Riffe Sight mask and what a difference a properly fitting mask makes. My question is: it comes in clear, amber, and mirrored. I shoot in amber lens glasses and wonder if an Amber lens mask would help in diving. I will probably only dive locally. Does anyone have an opinion either way? Thanks, Dave |

Welcome to SB. Where is local for you? What's a comfortable depth range for you to hunt in?

Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
Usually my diving will be near San Pedro where I grew up but I go as far south as Doheny St Beach and as north as Refugio State beach.
I'll probably be in 30 feet or less. |

Welcome to the board! You are going to get a lot of different opinions on this one. If you have the chance to try each before you decide, it will probably answer the question for you.
I personally like the amber lense masks. I think it is better in lower light and lower vis conditions. It may just be my personal preference, but I love it. |

Hey KillItNGrillIt,
I have a RIffe Sight in amber that doesn't fit my face. I used it (flooded my face) once in Baja 50$ and it's yours |

Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
Amber works great in murky water, but I also use mine in clear water. My buddy laughed and said that amber lenses don't work for lobster because it makes the lobsters black because of the red pigment.
Then I got five before he even had one and he stopped laughing. |
Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
Welcome to Spearboard!
I just ordered an Amber Lens mask since all of the Halibut guys swore that the Amber makes them stand out in the sand. We'll see..... Stay away from the Mirrored Lens. I had a Sporasub low volume mask with the mirror lens and the tint is way to dark for our murky CA. waters. It was boarderline OK when I used it in the Carribean. Good Hunting! |
Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
The amber lens tones down the glare from the "snow" . It will make your dives more comfortable if you suffer from motion sickness in poor conditions.

Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
The amber lens is great in low vis and low light conditions. When vis is good I go with my mirrored lenses.

Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
i love my ambers, cuts glare and makes the crap floating in the water less prominent. and they cut glare on the surface.
WELCOME! |
Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
I guess I'm going to have to borrow an amber mask some time and see what this is all about.

Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
I use SEADIVE RayBlocker http://www.seadiveinc.com/X-FreePS.htm
The lense has excellent optical clarity and is great for long surface swims in the bright California sunshine. People say that the amber lens helps with differentiating prey, but for me it is the quality of the lense more than the amber color. My TruVu RayBlocker mask performs well in any condition vs my clear mask. |
Re: Newbie Question: amber mask lens?
I picked up an atomic arc mask and love it. Makes a HUGE difference over clear mask. Especially in low vis diving.
Took a little while to get is to stop fogging, but now that is no longer fogs I couldn't imagine using anything else. http://www.shopatron.com/img/product...e1acb0cb61.jpg http://www.atomicaquatics.com/graphics/ARC.gif http://www.atomicaquatics.com/vision.html |
