I've taken a new shaft and hit it with a sawsall just to get the notches nice and round and deeper than they might have normally been, this helps you ensure they are alll the way down in the groove....

Toyota has a nice inverter kit. That looks like a Chevy, but see if there is an OEM inverter you can install, then run the wire harness to inside the bed so you can have an outlet right in the side...
