Re: What depths are you guys taking the GoPros

The gopro 60m housing should be fine. I've taken one to 105m / 344ft without any leaks but I turned it on beforehand, no pushing buttons at depth. I was very impressed that it survived!

Re: More about the inverted polispast rollers

Gives you some idea of the madness that ensues when some latex tries to turn a corner at speed. Of course this exaggerated since there's no shaft involved and it's out of the water, so travelling...

Re: More about the inverted polispast rollers

Sorry mate I tried to post last time this was mentioned, I'll give it another go once I find the photos.

Re: More about the inverted polispast rollers

In principle, three things come to mind. All have to do with the mass of the rubbers and what their inertia is doing with respect to the barrel / spear.

1. Centrifugal force is trying to send the...

Re: nose clip recommendations

Ahh it's polyamide sorry, another website indicated it was aluminium. Should still be fine though. I guess something to note is that dives are initially quite repeatable, so it's not the end of the...

Re: nose clip recommendations

I can only really vouch for the trygons, which is expensive but effective. Pays to swap the pads for a material with a bit more friction though, they're ok initially but become too slick with a bit...

Re: nose clip recommendations

If it's for depth then an aluminum one is probably a lot better than plastic. You need a lot of clamping force. Trygons are good but I'm not sure they're being produced any more? This one is probably...

Re: About roller guns..

Or a still shot. Hopefully the photographer won't mind me sharing here. The effect exists, I suppose the question is the magnitude. This is dry and without a spear so probably a lot faster than a...

Re: About roller guns..

Yeah lower mass going around the rollers. So the effect would still be there, but tiny in comparison with the force of the rubbers or the inertia of the shaft.

Re: About roller guns..

Bands on a roller gun will try to lift off and take the long route around the rollers. They have mass and you're trying to turn them 180 degrees at speed, so centrifugal force will push the trailing...

Re: C4 mechanisim alternative?

I'd like to hear about muzzle solutions for those guns too. It's a pity that C4 can make such a beautifully engineered gun (the graphite looks near perfect to me) with a hopelessly dysfunctional...

Re: Sigal or Devoto shafts

Yeah it may be some characteristic other than hardness, but any fish over about 10kg simply destroyed the shafts, even when they didn't fight much. That's partly just the cost of using stainless but...

Re: Sigal or Devoto shafts

Sigal shoot well but are unbelievably soft. About one decent fish per shaft for me, so it's too expensive to keep using them. If only somebody made spring steel shafts in that shape.

Re: How long can you hold your breath?

That's complete rubbish I'm afraid. Suggest you read up on freediving physiology?

Re: How long can you hold your breath?

I know the brain cannot respire anaerobically. That's kind of the point. Your muscles can, and since you have a limited O2 reservoir you want to deprive your muscles of O2 as much as possible,...

Re: How long can you hold your breath?

A deep freediver is very much like a 100m sprinter. It's a slow motion sprint. Muscles are working anaerobically. Lactate production, severe acidosis, to the point of failure. Actually more like a...

Re: How long can you hold your breath?

It's pretty much the exact opposite of this (except for the oxygen conservation part). I could explain I guess but this really isn't a contentious thing in freediving. Essentially it's deeply...

Re: Thoughts on Staggered band sizes

If you can keep a gun stable enough to push a shaft dead straight, you should be able to put practically any amount of power through it. I think the stock effectively gives way before the shaft does...

Re: Thoughts on Staggered band sizes

You could smoothe out accel. with a cam / helical roller arrangement but it'd get pretty complicated

Re: Thoughts on Staggered band sizes

Different lengths would all still give you peak force right at the start, diminishing from there. The greater the stretch coefficient the longer and smoother the accel, which I guess is why the...

Re: Apnea/Reflex training - no water?

You should get fairly similar results in static without facial immersion. Bit less of a dive response than you'd have in the water, but that doesn't matter for static nearly as much as it does in the...
