Re: The Collapse of the Gulf of Mexico Grouper Fishery

Most people have no idea how bountiful the Gulf used to be. They think you have to run a minimum of 40 miles to catch decent fish. We used to troll Rapalas for Gags in the Bay. (1997-2000) This was...

Re: Why was the Gulf of Mexicos grouper fishery allowed to collapse?

about 100K

I was able to sell the entire comm business for what I put into it. A break even after years of shooting fish with friends and family. It turned out to be a hobby that payed for itself...

Re: Why was the Gulf of Mexicos grouper fishery allowed to collapse?

When I had invested my life savings into the IFQ fishery I thought the same way you did. "Things will get better, we just need more data, look at the red snapper fishery, if grouper go that way I'll...

Re: Why was the Gulf of Mexicos grouper fishery allowed to collapse?

Zack you are missing the point. This is not a thread about who is to blame for the collapse of the Gulf grouper fishery. Commercial vs. Recreational. I'm asking "Why was this allowed to happen." In...

Re: Why was the Gulf of Mexicos grouper fishery allowed to collapse?

I was part of the problem just as every person who was fishing in the Gulf was part of the problem. I might have been more of a problem due to my ability to get to some of the best locations and...

Re: Why was the Gulf of Mexicos grouper fishery allowed to collapse?

If we have seen how productive the Gulf can be why has it been allowed to be fished down to a remnant of what it was?

Here is a pic from the early 2000's after a charter. This is just me and my...

Re: Why was the Gulf of Mexicos grouper fishery allowed to collapse?

I remember the 5 fish rec limit at 20 inches. I also remember diving on inshore ledges and rock piles in less than 60 feet and as the bottom came into view it started moving. Then one gag would get...

Re: Why was the Gulf of Mexicos grouper fishery allowed to collapse?

We've seen the grouper population all around decrease significantly in the last 10 years. More people fishing is the obvious reason why there are less fish but why was this allowed to happen?

Why was the Gulf of Mexicos grouper fishery allowed to collapse?

Anyone who has been fishing for reef fish in the Gulf for more than 20 years will admit that fishing isn't what it used to be. I've been to the fisheries meetings, I've seen the commercial fishery...

Re: The Collapse of the Gulf of Mexico Grouper Fishery

Re: The Collapse of the Gulf of Mexico Grouper Fishery

The capacity of the "commercial" fleet has been reduced. Now that there are no longer any locations in the gulf that are unknown it takes less commercial fishermen to catch the same amount of fish....

Re: The Collapse of the Gulf of Mexico Grouper Fishery

Who do you think is the big guy in this situation? Is it the commercial fishing interests? They just lost about $7 million dollars in potential income due to the massive reduction in Total Allowable...

Re: The Collapse of the Gulf of Mexico Grouper Fishery

It's starting to feel like 2011 all over again. If the cycle repeats itself fishing should be open and good around 2028. Too bad the NMFS can't figure out how to prevent these booms and busts.

Re: The Collapse of the Gulf of Mexico Grouper Fishery

Word on the street was right. Looks like the NMFS and the Gulf Council think that the gag grouper fishery is in shambles. For the Gulf of Mexico commercial sector there has been an 83% reduction in...

Re: Last Dive

With as much roundup and fertilizer that gets put on every lawn near the coast I don't think algae blooms that kill fish are just a summer thing anymore.

Re: The Collapse of the Gulf of Mexico Grouper Fishery

It would be great to see some GoPro footage of these places that you claim to have healthy populations of gags. When I first started diving inshore in the late 90's we would see on some ledges and...
