Re: How do you train for Spearfishing / Freediving?

You may not feel much of anything. The test I learned is to wait for 5 minutes (lets mucus from your throat collect) after a deep dive and spit on your hand to look for blood.

Re: How do you train for Spearfishing / Freediving?

It's not a question of it being attainable. The issue is with whether or not you are trained to do so safely, which is what you will learn in a level 2 class. I won't go into the specifics of how...

Re: How do you train for Spearfishing / Freediving?

This is getting a bit beyond my knowledge, but I think it just depends on how hard you push yourself. If you're getting to the same point of lung/heart strain that you do with statics, dynamics are...

Re: How do you train for Spearfishing / Freediving?

I suggest just working on your fitness and diving form (good entry, efficient kicks, etc.) prior to a level 2 course and not pushing your depth beyond 20 meters. There is actually a specific safety...

Re: Ya'll like science?

What you're describing there is basically a viscous damper. I suspect that won't correspond nicely with what you're interested in. For example, a gun that exerts a high force for a short period of...

Re: Ya'll like science?

Something like that could work if you had the right material, although it would only give you a comparison of the maximum force exerted. You'd also need the contact area against this putty substance...

Re: Ya'll like science?

Yeah, as far as damping goes, I'm speculating that you eventually approach a spear velocity where bands can't really do any work on the spear because they're already contracting close to their...

Re: Ya'll like science?

I dig the project and really support any effort to separate fact from opinion on this topic. There's a lot of the latter, and little of the former ;) I especially applaud the effort you put into...

Re: Spearfishing/Freediving Log Book

Nice. I've recently started a very similar journal. You may also want to include the moon phase on there.

Re: Cortes bank November 12--15 SAND DOLLAR

Yeah, I would think so too. It's certainly possible that something happened during the skiff ride back or something like that. All I know is that it's bent right now. Oh well. Riffe 5/16 shaft,...

Re: Cortes bank November 12--15 SAND DOLLAR

That makes a lot of sense. I guess it would only apply then to non-break-away setups. Thanks, and sorry for hijacking this thread...

Re: Cortes bank November 12--15 SAND DOLLAR

Haha, well I feel your pain. Hmm, that could be a possibility. There isn't much recoil and I've hit a few fish with it before so hopefully that's not the issue.

I got it new this spring. ...

Re: Cortes bank November 12--15 SAND DOLLAR

Yeah, no kidding, it was painful. None of those were hail-Mary shots at all. I suspect it's a combination of my (lack of) skill, a bent shaft, and possibly too short of a shooting line. I'll fix...

Re: Cortes bank November 12--15 SAND DOLLAR

Thanks for the tip, guys. I just measured my setup and I get ~23 feet from the gun handle to the tip of the spear. Is that reasonable for a 4-band gun with ~50 inches of band stretch? I'm about...

+1 on Matt's comments! Big thanks to George and the whole crew as always!

Except for a little incoming weather on Sunday, conditions were beautiful for the whole trip and we were able to hit a...

Re: Cortes bank November 12--15 SAND DOLLAR

Is anyone else bringing scuba gear? I don't want to bother lugging all my gear down if I'm the only one with a tank at night.

See y'all there!

Re: New in the big calibre)

Looks rad! If you don't mind me asking, are you using a bladder mold, making two piece and joining, or laying up over core (e.g. foam or wood)?

Re: Experience with Spearfishingworld.com?

Yup, had no problems over several orders. They called me up right away to discuss alternate options on a couple of things I ordered that were out of stock which was nice.

Re: Malibu Conditions Permathread

Anyone go out recently? I'm pessimistic about conditions with the swell that came through earlier in the week but would like to get out this weekend.

Re: Spearfishing Video Thread

Eddie, one of the first signs of a blackout is an involuntary release of air. I strongly suspect it was not intentional. He was a bit aggressive with the breathe up but most things were done right...

Re: Fii course recommendation

It's definitely money well spent. Freediving is at least 75% technique and this will make a big difference with both performance and safety. I took my level 1 class with Jeremy Caulkins in OC. ...

Re: Recent Dive Reports, and a couple gear questions

Just my $.02 on your wetsuit question: A newer or thicker suit will not only have more total buoyancy than an older or thinner suit, it will change buoyancy more as a function of depth since a...
