Re: Are MVD / Huntmaster spearguns reliable?

Are MVD guns on their own pretty good? On par with Riffe, Rob Allen, etc?

Are MVD / Huntmaster spearguns reliable?

I'm looking to buy my first gun for shore diving. I'm not looking to spear big fish - just enough to feed me for a day or two each time.

I'm in Australia and there's a local shop selling a 90cm...

Any kind of trigger mechanism for a sling spear?

Is there any kind of a device out there that allows you to swim around with your sling spear cocked and loaded and which can be released instantly via some kind of trigger mechanism? I know that you...

Rock sock recommendations? For wider feet?

Right now I use a 3mm sock with a thin rubber sole that flexes just as much as the neoprene itself. It totally sucks when walking over rocks, barnacles, etc. so I actually walk out with Crocs first...

What's the reason for not allowing spearing for certain fish and in freshwater?

I'm mostly on the west coast of the USA and Canada.

Spearing in freshwater isn't allowed AFAIK.

Spearing for, say, ocean perch is allowed in Washington state but not in British Columbia.

Re: Regulator questions.

I mean, a balanced reg simply means it's just as easy to breathe from at depth than at the surface.

If your first stage is no longer balanced but functional, I'd just roll with it. It'll just be...

Re: Telling a female urchin, best environments for crays, abalone, and scallops?

Thanks. The videos of people doing scallop diving in Tasmania or Victoria (Australia) all seem to show them just sitting there on sandy bottoms. They are *never* in overhangs or cracks or caves. In...

Telling a female urchin, best environments for crays, abalone, and scallops?

I don't have a speargun, so fish are a bit out of the question at the moment. Whatever I catch I need to be able to just grab with my hands. I'm in Tasmania. I freedive a bunch but I'm relatively new...

Re: Which size suit to buy given my measurements?

Awesome, thanks. What do you consider to be "too far off" in the height department? Like over 6 inches?

Good lightweight collapsible travel speargun?

I'd like to get a speargun that's lightweight and can break down to a small size.

The JBL Magnum Combo gun is perfect except for the weight (7.7lb!). It's basically buying two spearguns in one,...

Anyone tried Skeleton or Spetton wetsuits before?

The cheapest brand I've seen is Spetton.

Spetton's quality seems to be fine, right? $289 AUD for a 2-piece 3mm seems quite alright.

Re: Defending against sharp rocks with freediving socks?

Hmm... ok.

Well, honestly a lot of the time all I want to do is go snorkeling, so I don't have a float or lines with me. Going down from point A and then climbing back up at a distant point B has...

Defending against sharp rocks with freediving socks?

I dive with full-pocket freediving fins and socks with a thin layer of rubber underfoot, but it's always a painful challenge when the area is filled with jagged rocks that I have to delicately walk...

Are there any good abalone spots within 3 hours of Melbourne? Like around Phillip Island, the Bass Strait, or Torquay? Preferably in an area protected from the majority of waves because I'll be...

Re: My stupid wide feet need socks.

Are they very wide? I may have to size up to a 3mm if the 2mm is too thin. The reason my 1mm surf mocs fit really snug is because they had a pretty thick sole.

My stupid wide feet need socks.

I finally got a pair of fins that fit my size 7.5 4EEE feet - the Picasso Black Teams in the largest size they got - 44-46. The width is ok, but I need socks for a snug fit.

I've got a pair of...
