Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

I just got back from the staging area of the spill site and thought I would post some observations.

The amount of oil is very significant. It coats the beach, sand, rocks, etc. There are a lot...

Re: Frozen Ab like rubber?

Ross: great looking shell bits. They would also make really nice pieces for a mosaic.

With freezing, freezing them quickly is important. The best way is to immerse in liquid nitrogen (clean, pat...

Re: Ab Poacher Gets Stiff Payback

Withering was first noted in populations of black abalone at San Nic, just the symptom in the wake of the 82-82 EN, then the bacteria that causes it was finally identified in the wake of the 97-98...

Re: ENSO Update

[QUOTE=rojodiablo;1940091]Water temps locally are NOT a good indicator of an El Nino. The water we have is purely from the jet stream not dipping below B.C. over the winter for more than a momentary...

Re: Edibles Snails of the California

I sometimes collect a sack of snails off the kelp when kayaking. Turban snails, moon snails, those stripey ones. Throw in a pot with some white wine. Not amazing, and not much in the way of yield,...

Re: New Abalone Regs for 2014

Oops, sorry, thought I had grabbed Mainphrame's quote in there as well, he asked if abalone tag monies went to aquaculture; that response was to his question.

Scrap Lundy has a great book about...

Re: New Abalone Regs for 2014

None of the abalone tag money goes toward abalone aquaculture.

CDFW does not run any state abalone facility, all the abalone hatcheries in the state are private. There is a white abalone...

Re: Flattie limit

IIRC, it varies by genus among flatfish, there are some that are exclusively right-eyed or left-eyed. I think Hippoglossus, the Atlantic and Pacific "true" halibut, are of this type. Paralichthys,...

Re: LA Times on Urchin Barrens off PV

It is a puzzle why this particular urchin barrens has persisted for so long. Once they have devoured everything on the reef, what do they eat? What are they living on?

I used to keep urchins...

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Hi all. I have a Humminbird 300TX and a Garmin 72 that I'd be happy to give away to a local ocean enthusiast. Not fancy but they work, would be good for someone that's hoping to kit out a little...

Re: Shuck and awe: California oyster farm loses to environmentalists

There was an agenda item at yesterday's Fish and Game Commission meeting updating the Dept of Interior decision.

Did anyone happen to attend? Curious how the Commission feels about this since...

This is a good resource for harmful algal blooms:

but it should be interpreted with care. I have seen Stearns wharf observations with high...

Re: Mussels safe to eat right now?

No, I don't mind. I work in seafood and follow the harmful algal bloom literature. Surf and dive when I have time, like most everyone around here. I don't really participate on bulletin boards much...

Re: Mussels safe to eat right now?

The Oct 31 date is based on likelihood, not observation. Huge amount of variation in SoCal alone. See below, noting that Pseudonitzchia is the Domoic Acid alga of interest, but not the only one. ...
