Re: Public Comment - GAG

That was 5 years ago, Ben and the records then are near flawless. Those records dont even come close to supporting your BS. I've caught more big fish in one trip than both of my longline boats have...

Re: Public Comment - GAG

I don't dislike Bandit boats, Ben. I'm part owner of one. I just know that longlines have less to do with gags and bandit boats arent neccesarily better. Recreational fishermen dont compete with...

Re: Public Comment - GAG

Here are the facts about who catches what commercially: http://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/st1/commercial/landings/gear_landings.html

• Traps caught less than half of 1% (near zero) of gags overall and...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

Don, why did you not include bandit fishing and hook & line fishing in your list? The science suggests they are no better than any other types of fishing. Do fish somehow fare better when retrieved...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

Sounds like we are starting to agree, Don. We do know what the landings were, and they weren’t a problem. Also, landings ARE controlled with commercial quotas.....first time I've heard you say...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

No, the potential selectivitity doesn't solve all the issues. :D But if that is established and the lower mortality of traps is established, the other issues are worth looking for solutions to,...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

Mike, it was all 7 trap permit histories that we could come up with from Gulf fishermen. I'm sure Science center has better data, but this was a pretty good indication that traps could be selective....

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

Yes, I do. I also want to bet that its in a closed area, has all kinds of bones under it, several longline clips holding the doors closed, and is full of fish with trap rash suffering from...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

Mike, you work for NMFS. Did you not report these?

Taps can be configured differently for different species and can be made very selective. Traps can also be constructed to catch a broad range of...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

You are an absolute Liar, Bill Parks. "Very few for trapping". Every bit of the rest of this is made up shit by Bill Parks, the liar and his sidekick Don Demaria. No data. No facts. A case built on...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

It's mis-stated, my apologies.

There’s already scientific evidence that traps catch 95% red grouper and less than 1% Gag Grouper in the Gulf...........With lower bycatch mortality than other...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

Step backward?

The evidence is that traps configured correctly and utilized correctly catch 95% Red Grouper and 6 tenths of a percent Gag. All we are out to do is to confirm scientifically how...

Talking Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

More Bullshit. You really need to try to go fishing and see how easy it would be to "cheat".

Trap boats run maybe 6 knots. The enforcement boats run 9 times faster. All reef fish boats have VMS...

Don, I'm not the one blowing smoke up peoples asses here.

Nobody expected the council to flip a switch and yell "have at 'er, boys!"

The commercial sector is working...

Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

Yes, without question. And yes, what I wrote is true.

Fish trap boats are required to stay nearby their traps, unlike crab traps or lobster traps.

No longer involved with the FRA, I'm a commercial fisherman. I respect and support most (not all) of what they do.

There is a lot of negative hype going on here and it doesn't help the fishery one...

Lightbulb Re: Proposal to allow limited fish trapping to return to the Gulf.

Thats not true, Don.

The Situation

We don’t want to catch gags. We don’t want to catch red snapper unless we have quota. We don’t want to catch turtles, dolphins, or sharks.

We just...

Re: Longliners say rule endangers livelihood

1) Bottom Longlining is the most heavily monitored fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.
2) A small sampling during one year indicates (does not prove) that Longliners may be catching more turtles than...
