Re: Pole spear build questions.

What was the OD on that spear I had you make for me all those years ago? I honestly can't remember but I do remember it was pretty skinny.

Re: are there any regulations we should be pushing for?

:stupid: They've taken enough against our will. Why would you even think about giving them incentive to take more? You want sheeps up a couple inches, they might give you that and then rework the RCG...

Re: Quick Yak Question

Some lakes have a SOT only rule. IIRC Skinner has that rule. Most lakes have a Quagga/zebra mussel inspection requirement before they'll let you launch. If your kayak is wet, it usually won't pass.

Re: Looking for pic for triggered polespear

I think, for me to consider a rest hook as a trigger, it has to fire from the rest position without an intermediate step. If I have to unload it or otherwise move it off of the rest position before I...

Re: 9th Annual Big Ab Big Ling Dive Event June 6th Manchester CA

Man, has it really been 7 years since I first went to the BABL? I wish I could go this year, but still in Japan and all that jazz.

Re: Grunion Run may mean Halibut

That said, there are some spots that are secret, because they're the spot within the spot that require intimate knowledge of the specific structure.

I.E. a small depression where they tend to...

Re: DIY carbon polespear question

I use my pole on those kinds of fish, no problem. Mine is definitely on the skinny/light side at about 15mm OD and 12.7mm ID, total length about 3.6 meters, but most of the fish here in Japan aren't...

Re: My current pole, carbon fiber homemade Japanese-style

That sounds plausible. All I know for sure is that the hook is SS and it can take at least 20kg of force without shearing off ;)

I'm going on a trip for about 4 or 5 days to one of the offshore...

Re: My current pole, carbon fiber homemade Japanese-style

I got my CF tubes from Rock West Composites. I bought them when I was back in the states. I assembled the basic spear before I left for Japan.

The rivets are sold next to the webbing at the...

Re: My current pole, carbon fiber homemade Japanese-style

It's been awhile. I've modified my pole some more over the winter in preparation for the upcoming seasons. In short, I reworked the grip. I reversed the setup, to where the hook is now in my hand and...

Re: Chinese Steamed Method using Sheephead

Nah, no need to hit the underside. It's mostly to sizzle the fresh set of aromatics and get the fish to release some juices to mix with the soy sauce. It's also a presentation thing, since it gets...

Re: Chinese Steamed Method using Sheephead

Whole fish is the classic preparation. Technique is just about the same, but you need to steam it for a little longer. I like to bring it up to a full steam for about 5 minutes with the fish in there...

Except to fish vertebrae. They get a little misaligned sometimes.

Re: Chinese Steamed Method using Sheephead

If your wife finds the ginger a bit too strong, I'd suggest slicing it thinner. You'll get the same flavor but it"ll steam through more thoroughly/be cooked by the hot oil so the bite won't be as...

Re: How do you aim your Polespear?

They look like plecostomus to me, but I could be wrong.

As for how I shoot, I tend to grip it with thumb on the left side of the pole and the rest of the fingers wrapped around and the arm...

Re: My current pole, carbon fiber homemade Japanese-style

I don't have any more pics on me at the moment. I'll take some later. The webbing is just the standard nylon webbing and the rivets to pin it to itself.

The metal ring is a regular stainless...

Re: Thoughts on spearfishing competitions?

Not at all. It's the best part about it. It's a reason to get together and hang out disguised as a competition.

I agree with Kyle though, aside from the BABL, the only other comp that I'd come...

Re: Thoughts on spearfishing competitions?

Some tournaments are structured, but also not designed for competition. The Big Ab Big Ling is a prime example.

It's really an excuse for everyone to get together for a weekend of camping,...

Re: Spearing in Okinawa

Try asking around on base. I know there's quite a few guys out that way who are spearing. Some of them don't come to the boards anymore though.

I live on the other side of Japan, closer to Tokyo.

Re: Loading Polespear-At the surface? At the bottom? When you see a fish?

Hate to tell you Dano, but that style of hook is old tech. Most of us polespear enthusiasts have experimented with that style and moved on already.

The main problems, IMO, are the rubber still...
