Venice LA Bluewater trip March 16th and 17th

We had a great trip out of Venice last week with three guys from South Florida two from St.Louis and myself. We speared amberjack, black snapper and yellowfin tuna, did not find the wahoo.

I'm going back in March and have a boat booked for the 16th and 17th,same boat as last week with Capt. Lee McLean to hunt wahoo and tuna. There are two spots open. The cost is $1200/day plus fuel and tip.Costs will be divided equally.

Let me know if you are interested.

You guys should have a great time. The river is still low so it should be easy to find the rip close in. Nothing like a little blue water hunting out of Venice. Make sure you send pics and put em up on the thread.

You guys should have a great trip. The weather is 1-2 ft and people have been crushing the Tuna. We went fishing on saturday, landed one black fin and a yellow fin. The yellow fin was a beast at 122 lbs. I know of a couple of other boats that got numerous black and yellowfin tuna in just the last few days.

Send pics when you guys get back, Venice is awesome this time of year.

Hey Big C

does the Lump still hold tuna this time of year?

I used to fish it a long time ago but ever since Katrina it seemed to have never came back

Are you guys fishing the other salt domes or rigs?

thanks

I was wondering how long it would take you to brag on here about your fish. You forgot to mention that it was 122lbs after being gutted and bled.

After eating it on the dock, I'll never be able to go to another sushi restaraunt and say "this is the best tuna I've ever had". You can't get much fresher unless you took a bite out of it when it was still in the water.

Re: Venice LA Bluewater trip March 16th and 17th

Bill, we were on the Mini lump to the East. I havent fished the big lump in a while. I usually do about 3 tuna trips a year then its all diving. Even though we only got the one yellowfin (122 lbs) a blackfin and a King Mackerel, I heard reports of other boats doing well with tuna on the mini lump earlier in the week.

I was shocked how much meat came off that one Yellowfin tuna. I have 7 bags vacuum sealed and each bag should have 4-6 steaks. That one fish fed 6 fishermen. It was a real blessing. Plus the 45 minute fight was well worth it!!!

Hey Big C

thanks for the info!

I think all of my YFT fishing/diving will have to be closer to Pensacola/Orange Beach.

I sure miss the days when the lump was insane!

.

don't know how Katrina messed it up. Maybe covered it in mud where the bait doesn't frequent it anymore

I used to winter my boat in Port Sulfer behind Gauthiers grocery just before the high bridge. we'd hit the lump every Saturday at daylight

I wonder if any of you guys know Randy Gauthier and hows he doing?

thanks again for the info

One thought is that all of the anchors that have been used over the years have caused damage to the lump and maybe thats why its not as productive as in the past.

Re: Venice LA Bluewater trip March 16th and 17th

Jetro, I would almost guarentee that the anchoring led to 75% of the reason that there are no longer tons of fish on the Midnight lump. Any given weekend and sometimes weekdays from late December until April, there were sometimes 100 boats anchored on the lump tearing up natural coral and bottom structure. Most of the idiots would not have the required 600+ feet of anchor rope....so they would drag a 15# anchor from one side to the other. Imagine tons of boats doing this over and over again... There are other factors but I would guess that Big C is right on with his statement.
