Yes, you do not need a fishing license if you are under 16 years of age......but you still have to abide by the laws and regulations just like anyone else who must carry a fishing license.

You can buy them in some grocery stores by the beach, actually. Just don't try to buy one with your wetsuit on, they apparently aren't used to that sort of thing

You can buy them online now. You print out a temp license and get the real thing in the mail. Very convenient imo

I carry my reg license, and then I stow the "Temp" in my wallet. I know it's only valid for 2 weeks... but I figure in a pinch I can show it to DF&G and at least it has my license number on it... better than "I lost my license" or something like that

Although (and I'm not trying to condone illegal behaviour here), unless someone is pulling ten lobsters, snacking on raw Garibaldi, or returning to La Jolla Shores with a Black Sea Bass, I doubt anyone will ask to see your fishing license. Besides, no one carries their wallet in an open cell wetsuit with no pockets unless they're out of weights. It's sort of honor-system bound. Even though I always have my license, no-ones ever asked me if I had it.

Q: Do I have to wear my fishing license?
A: No. As of March 1, 2010, anglers no longer have to display their sport fishing license on their outer clothing above the waist. However, their sport fishing license must be in their immediate possession while fishing, except when diving as provided in Fish and Game Code Section 7145.

Further

7145. (a) Except as otherwise provided in this article, every
person 16 years of age or older who takes any fish, reptile, or
amphibian for any purpose other than profit shall first obtain a
valid license for that purpose and shall have that license on his or
her person or in his or her immediate possession or where otherwise
specifically required by law or regulation to be kept when engaged in
carrying out any activity authorized by the license. In the case of
a person diving from a boat, the license may be kept in the boat, or
in the case of a person diving from the shore, the license may be
kept within 500 yards of the shore.

I suppose the 500 yards is so that you can park and leave the license in the car.
