Russian Gulch?

I'm confused...I heard that Russian Gulch was now part of an MLPA, and closed to spearing, fishing, and ab diving. However I can't find that in the regs. Does anyone know what the real story is? Can we still take fin fish and abs there?
Thanks,
Ron.

Re: Russian Gulch?

Damn, I can't take home kelp?!?!?!?

What about the kelp that's still attached to the abalone shells

Sounds like it's still open to most of the things that I'm willing to eat.

Yuummmmmm; marine worms......

Re: Russian Gulch?

Greg,
I looked at that after I last spoke to you about it and I hoped that was correct. I just asked on here because I had heard, (and now I don't recall where...), that it was part of an MLPA and closed. Sounds like that's (fortunately) not the case. Thanks!

Rich,
Knowing you, I'm sure you could come up with some kind of Marine Worm and Kelp recipe, but I don't think I'd wanna try it...

Re: Russian Gulch?

Ron,

Unfortunately there are a lot of people /places that do not fully understand the mlpa restrictions as well as smr's etc.

This will actually be part of the topic at Saturdays talk.

Well, I haven't yet but you've inspired me to make an attempt....
Maybe at Matt's cook-off competetion in August?

By the way, does anyone have a good recipe for racoon?

Rich, Sorry I missed this. Check the Cabelas website. They have a lot of wild game recipes, and I believe there's a book out from the 1920's with recipes for just about everything...I know some folks who were around for the depression that did indeed cook coons, opossums, birds, etc.

Re: Russian Gulch?

I ate raccoon once, I was about 14 and my dad cooked one up the dog tree'd in the back 40 I think he baked it in the oven, and possibly smoked it first??? Anyhow I thought it tasted good about like gray squirrel and tough like a squirrel. Then I remember going to school and telling friends about it. Soon after my brother, sister and I were then all given the nicknames coon-eater. My sister denied ever eating it to all her friends but her older brothers threw her under the bus haha. I would eat it again, just dont really feel the need to kill one.

Re: Russian Gulch?

Surprising number of raccoon recipes on cooks.com:

http://www.cooks.com/rec/search/0,1-0,raccoon,FF.html

Even more surprising, not all begin with "nail raccoon to board...."

Back on topic: The outer pinnacles at Russian Gulch are a fun kayak dive.

Re: Russian Gulch?

My current plan is to hit Bragg on April 1st., and come home on the 3rd. I'd like to get in as many dives as I can. Unfortunately, I just looked at weather.com's 10 day forecast for my area and it calls for snow on the first. Hope the coast isn't too stormy...

Re: Russian Gulch?

Hard to say what it's going to do a week from now, but I was considering taking a day off work this Tuesday to hit some fish up in Sonoma.
Looks like it may lay down for a day or so before the next storm rolls in....
Sonoma forecast:

We'll see if my buddy can make it, he might be working.
I was thinking Sonoma, and I usually start peeking over the cliff around Jenner to check the swell/viz, and head North until I find something diveable (up to the edges of the MPA's, of course ). Love a Garmin, that's for sure.

I haven't even bought my ab card yet, but I've almost filled my Steelhead card for the season......

You need a card for steelhead now? I used to fish for them in the American River around the Watt Ave. bridge when I was a kid.
