"Off season" pursuits and bragging thread

Not that we truly have an off season here, at least not in Oregon, but I know that many of us pursue other hobbies and adventures worth sharing.

Following suit with a thread in the NE, I propose we make this thread "sticky" so that we spearo's can share photos and stories of our other hobbies.

Being the narcissist that I am, I'll start!

Goose hunting with my little bro this past December. He was visiting from Florida and couldn't hunt, but didn't want to be left out with me holding the goose AND the shotgun.

My buck from this fall. He's the biggest i've ever shot, by far, and only my second with a bow.

Chuckar hunting in SE Oregon. We climbed up and down those mountains for three days and didn't kill a single bird, but we had a blast doing it.

My first beaver. Shot with a .223 at 40 yards. Meat wasn't bad, and I'll have the fur back this Spring.

Goose hunting on the Deschutes

Coming back after an unsuccessful morning on the river

Emily with her firs kill - a goldeneye hen I put her on at about 20yds.

Mallard double

Keep it going!

Casey

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread

I like goats. last season was my second sucessful hunt. first one ended with a 50" book billy, this one was little guy, but fun none the less. (from another thread on here.)

Quote:

some scale. i'm the black dot. lots of pitches climbed in excess of 70 degrees.

Billy was shot from the knob his toe points to. on the other side it's almost 30' vertical. had to boulder up, get a toe hold and then tripod my chest against another outcropping. never taken a shot like that before. only had 3 days to hunt this year, so took the first billy i found. this one's a symmetrical 8.5". I spotted him from atop the ridge in the center of the pic.

Went up alone the following morning and deboned him. took just over 40lbs of meat + skull out.

Nice work gentlemen. Casey, if you ever need help eating any of those birds, please let me know. Also, was wondering what you do with the feathers? Those mallards have some nice plumage for tying flies.

I got back into running last year after a 22 year hiatus (since highschool). I ran my 5k personal best last summer with a time of 17:36 and I did it barefoot (no, not with those toe shoes either).

Wow, Josh! That is an awesome 5K time! I just ran a 10K race this morning - 41:22. We should go running together some time, but I would hate to hold you back.

wow,you guys are way to fast for me. i do 5k every morning, but it's about a 25min jog. I've had my right knee restrung 3 times, so i'm happy with that for now.

Thanks Calvin, 41:22 10k is solid too! I've been telling myself I'm going to do a 10k this summer, just haven't committed to the training yet. I live right next to Forest Park and run Wildwood Trail all the time. Call me so we can hit it!

Samik, you ever look into barefoot/minimalist running? The BF/minimalist community is full of people who came to it after suffering knee injuries and other impact related traumas that come from (believe it or not) heavily padded running shoes.

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread

Josh, I've tried barefoot, and my try again. right now i'm still confied to the treadmill. I get about a week on pavement before my knee turns into a pumpkin. just to much impact I guess. I've never been very graceful I'm on ACL#3, PCL#4, LCL#4. Lost a fight with a 1600lb Camel about 8yrs ago. long story.

it's weird though, climbing mountians with a backpack never bothers my knee, if anything I'm still just as nimble as I ever was.

I look forward to the beers that we'll drink while you tell the story of the 1600lb camel.

You bring the Moose Drool (only because we can't get it in canada), and I'll tell you the tale of Dundas The Camel.

Re: "Off season" pursuits and bragging thread

Ok, I have to show you all how bragging is done around these parts!

This was the Great Killer Thresher Shark of 2010, which I dispatched via Kayak. The struggle ended up taking me two hours and dragging me 2 miles out to sea.

The locals erected a monument celebrating the eradication of the creature!

The next day I have to lead 13 pitches of 5.13d in order to replant that last few remaining California condor eggs before the mother returned to her nest,

but I cooled of that evening stealing some nice gentle shoulders out from under a local surf pro's nose.

I was not aware Bear Grylls did that. I did not mean to imply that Philip did.

I have read that is a lousy survival strategy anyway.
