They're great fins for boat diving. They're super comfortable, and kick great. The problem is getting them on/off in the surf. That's their only real downside besides the price for plastic fins.

Also, you may want to try the "search" function. It may answer a lot of your questions about gear and getting started. We were all new to the sport and the board once, and had many of the same questions.
