sun 7-1 peanut killers
Got invite to head down to boca to do some leisurely bw freediving with Chad and Hector. Went about 10 miles out to find a nice stretch of weedline. Water was very warm and very blue, but with alot of nutrient and tons of bait. Absolutely gorgeous bw conditions. Blue runners were under the paddys chasing the little jacks with filefish, crabs, and all sorts of other life.
First paddy nothing but bait...move on to second paddy and the guys see a mahi from the surface under the paddy so Hector and I jump in. As I dove inverted I saw a group of little peanuts coming in so I changed direction and skewered the first one. About 30 minutes later still on the same spot hector go his (and his first mahi!!). Unfortunately Chad never got a shot on one but was happy to have fish on the boat. They were not big but made for a killer dinner for the family. Unfortunately this was my second outing with my go pro and I managed to screw up videoing the shot on the fish! I got lots of great video, but when the guys saw the fish under the paddy I guess I turned the cam on as I jumped in??? Then, when I saw the fish moving in, I turned the cam off (thinking I was turning it on to get the shot!) and blew catching it on film. Oh well, next time. For the foodies out there, I blackened the mahi with 'redfish magic' and used a cilantro-lime butter I had left over from swordfish last night to blacken it on skillet with. It was accompanied by brocolli wild rice, homemade cornbread, and fresh mango from my work partners tree. WELL WORTH shooting little peanuts! Oh, and I got a nice couple pouches of roe I will fry up tomorrow morning to try for the first time...
