Grouper Not Changed In FL State Waters
OK, this is what I find on the FWC web site. Keep on shooting them, just make sure you're within the 9 mile limit:
http://myfwc.com/whatsnew/05/statewi...perlimits.html "GROUPER FISHING RULES DIFFER IN STATE-FEDERAL GULF WATERS August 10, 2005 Contact: Lee Schlesinger (850) 487-0554 Recreational grouper bag limits in state waters haven't changed; in federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico, they have. Federal waters begin nine nautical miles offshore in the Gulf. A nautical mile is 6,076.115 feet as opposed to a statute mile, which is 5,280 feet. In Gulf state waters, the daily bag limit for grouper is five, only two of which can be red grouper. The new bag limit in federal waters in the Gulf allows three grouper, only one of which can be red. Also, Gulf federal waters are closed to grouper harvest throughout November and December, but there is no closed season in state waters. " Also, if you look at this PDF it also states that bag limits have NOT changed in FL state waters: http://myfwc.com/marine/grouper/RedGrouperIssues3.pdf

It is my understanding that the FWC will enforce a 1 red grouper limit even in state waters but you can still keep five grouper total.

Re: Grouper Not Changed In FL State Waters
They need to get the info out. That is the latest stuff I could find on their web page & that was this morning.
It might be worth while to print those 2 items out & take them on the water. If they're going to enforce a bag limit, or if you may be in a position to contest that, at least you would have their own published statements to back you up.

Re: Grouper Not Changed In FL State Waters
The FWCC voted to lower the bag limit on red grouper to 1, it may not be in print, and I don't know when it will take effect, but the FWCC will enforce the state law of 5/1, and in Federal waters the interim rule of 3/1 with a closed season in November and December 2005.
Next month (november) NMFS will be voting on a permanet reduction of the grouper bag limit, of 3/1, there are other alternatives, but this seems to be their preffered option, In my opinion this will be passed by the NMFS. I also think they will vote in a 1 month closure for recreational grouper fishing. They (NMFS) already voted, and it was passed to eliminate the Captain and crew from keeping their bag limit while under a charter. Anyone that can write letters, send e-mails, make phone calls and go to the meeting in Ft walton Beach should, as once government takes away, it usually does not give back. |

Re: Grouper Not Changed In FL State Waters
Keep in mind that's 9 nautical miles, too. So basically it's really 10.3 statute miles (i have my GPS set up in statute miles)....

This is the Gulf side, it does not affect the Atantic.

When he listed 9 miles, I'm assuming most are thinking 9 statute miles like I automatically do...

Steve, I am sure you are aware of it and thanks for the conversion, a lot of people get confused between Statute and nautical Miles. I just don't want people over on the East Coast getting confused on the new rules. The 2 blacks/gags is bad enough for you guys. |

Re: Grouper Not Changed In FL State Waters
Planning a trip to the Lower Keys in November-
The best I could tell reading the website myfwc.com and rereading this thread is that the November/December moratorium on firetrucks is in Fed waters but Florida waters are the same regs as they have been (5 aggregate/1 limit). Everyone mentioned the Gulf, but that would also mean there is no moratorium on Atlantic waters within 9 miles too, right? This may look obvious, but there is still some uncertainty in my party. Thanks, Bill Van Deman |
