road trip help?
Looks like I'm gonna make a mac-daddy road trip in April. My bro-in-law lives in Costa Rica. He comes back to the States every so often to make some good $, then back to live the good life. This go 'round, he's picked up a nice Chevy van, (worth big $ in C.R.) and he asked if I'd like to ride shotgun! That's right, we're friggin driving to Costa Rica! Roughly 3300 miles! Fly back. Any body else done this? Any tips/warnings? How 'bout it, Hector?! I wish I could carry my trusty .45! I'm not comfortable driving thru Central America. The travel advisories on the DAN site scare the bjesus outta me.
If I make it, I gonna dive my ass off for a couple of weeks. He's a badass (Navy Seal/UDT in 'Nam) so, I figure he'll have my back. Fing Sandanista gorilla bastards! Guess I'll bring my Louisville Slugger!

I would probably call AAA or even the State Dept. and see if there are any travel advisories and customs implications driving from here to there.
Is there a way to let the US Embassies, in the countries you plan on driving thru, know you'll be down there?? |

Good ideas, fellas. I'll definately check in to them. There's alot to consider. Wondering about immunizations, as well.
I don't think anyone would want to kidnap my sorry ass. They would be highly disappointed, and I would be highly screwed if they wanted a ransom!

Problem is the poorest American has 100 times the money of the average nicaraquan. I have heard the road bandits in Nicaraqua are pretty bad dudes. If you ain't got no money, they just kill ya.

Grayface
IM me, I've had several friends who have done it. It ain't no easy trip, and you got to be REAL careful, especially when driving through southern Mex and Nicauragua. Don't drive at night. Oaxaca is the gnarliest Mexican state. Avoid driving there at night at all costs. PS DO NOT BRING A GUN INTO MEXICO!!!!!!!! Many people have been incarcerated there for over 20 years just for possessing a gun. One guy missed the last exit in texas w/ a gun in his car and was forced to turn at the border x-ing. Only to be searched first and incarcerated where he still sits in jail. Last edited by inletsurf; 01-22-2004 at 07:19 PM. |
