PV Report - 2.5 Just Before The Storm

Went with Rob (SoCalRob) at ~7:30am. Viz started at about 20-25ft. Beautiful dive. Saw 10+ horn sharks between the two of us. And Joel - we spared your "friends" the monster goats, so I hope you're happy

Anyway, I snagged a whopping 2.8lb calico (18" long). Got decent shot placement so I didn't ruin any of the meat. Ironically, I have a harbor seal to thank for this fish. He chased this calico right to me, and distracted him for me while I took the shot.

By the time we got out, the wind and swells were way up, and the viz was around 5'. Looks like we got the last good dive in before the storm.

thanks for letting those big dudes live. lotta times you can see 3 or 4 big goats moving around in a room and you'll also see a few pig calicos and sandies when you get there. i almost think of those big guys as indicators..... when the goats don't spook, you can sometimes get close and have easy shots at dinner!

that size is perfect for some tacos.

an aside: if you continue down PV boulevard when you come off the hill across the coast highway all the way out to texas looseys, across the street is a cooking store that sells huge cutting boards darn cheap. you can fillet you pig calico without getting slime on the counter.... just an FYI

Yeah, I think I'll make some tacos and something else with it. The last one I got I poached whole and it kinda sucked. I'll be scopin' out the recipe section. Oh, and I have a bigger cutting board, it's just annoying to clean b/c it doesn't fit in the dishwasher. I like calico smell on my counter

all ya gotta do is cut it down to size on the width and it'll fit fine. i have a wife and kids. fish smell DOES NOT fly around here. i do my 'butchering' outside on the deck where i can simple green and hose it all down.

mike - 16 x 20 for around 20-25 bucks i think.

i was comparing it to the fancy wooden ones when i called it 'darn cheap'.

i looked into getting the material wholesale and it's still quite expensive and tough to find in a manageable size. if i recall correctly.

i ran into the 16x20 and haven't looked since.

Scotty here, how did Rob's gun work w/ the single band? I thought he was going to call or come over and make a new band? I havn't heard from him yet. Just curious.

Hey Scotty, Rob had to go to work right after we dove, so that's probably why he didn't call you. I believe he said his bands had been set up backwards, with the long one going to his forward tab, and the short one on his back tab. So he reversed 'em and said it worked better.

On another note, I meant to ask you this lastnight @ the meeting: I'm using a Riffe Hawaiian Mid-Handle (48"). I forgot what my shaft diameter is but it's thicker than Rob's Picasso has (maybe 5/16?). I've got 3 5/8" bands on there. It seems to shoot better since I got these mods from the original thin-shaft / 2-band setup. Is my current setup good in your opinion?

Hey Scotty,

Yea the one band thing worked well but was as you said WAY underpowered. I ended up swapping the bands since I have one long and one short and they were mixed up so I flipped them and then the spear had punch but was still shooting low but I'm going to go a few more times to see if the bands loosen up since I think it has changed since the first time I took them. Can I raincheck the new banding for maybe a week to see if my current bands don't "break in".

Dave - looking forward to diving again and way to go for once again one upping me at my own spots
