Talking Forever Stoked ! My son shoots first WSB

Well it finally happened

After many days in the water Aidan had his first sighting of WSB today
and he did not hesitate to take full advantage of the opportunity

It has been nearly a year now since i called up Daryl Wong and asked him to build a gun that Aidan could load and maneuver but still be effective at taking a big WSB!
The next guy that made this possible was oceanos for custom designing a great warm 5 mil suit (thanks Joe Nguyen for tipping me off on this one!).
with the wetsuit keeping him warm this year, Aidan got serious about wanting to land a WSB. We have spent 10-12 half days this year looking for fish fighting the cold, bad vis and seasickness
well today was his moment

He eagerly rode his bike down to the boat after junior guards today and was there when i got off of work. we made it out to the spot and suited up. After about a 1/2 hr of swimming up current we came across a very fishy spot. On the second drop down to 40 ft i saw a 25 lb wsb out in the 20-25 ft haze and thought to take this one so Aidan could help me fight it. I shot the fish and had Aidan help hold the line while I recovered the fish.
As I was swimming back to the boat,
Aidan started screaming "dad I got one! I shot one! come here quick!"
As I swam over I immediately noticed the reel line screaming off"
I asked him "did you get a good shot" to which he replied
"right behind the head"
(he was on the surface when he saw the fish swimming away to his right. He quickly duck dove and lined up on the fish as it swam away)

So i tell Aidan to put the breaks on that fish
as he holds the line i see him get pulled under and through the kelp
I then grabbed the line and could instantly tell that this is a strong fish
We spent the next ten minutes following the reel line almost straight out into the outer kelp which is in 60-70 ft of water.
The fish never tied up. She just kept trying to swim out into deeper water 15 ft or so from the surface.
When we got to the fish i could see that he did indeed have a nice shot behind the gill plate at the lateral line however i did not see the exit
In a panic i partially brained the fish then let him bring it up to the surface and finish the job.
Only after the fish was in my sons hands did i notice that the tip had in fact toggled under the chin so there was no way this fish was going anywhere!!
many high fives later we got back to the dock where the fish went 38.7lbs

not bad for a 12 yr old

a deep gratitude to
to Mike Morgan
who always picked up the phone and gave me many honest detailed reports over the past few months
you are a stand up guy

thanks again to Daryl Wong who has never let me down
there truly is no substitute

Holy smokes. What a great accomplishment.

I think Eric and Nick still have way to go but this definitely will inspire them.

You must be one proud dad. Congrats Joe F. and son.

This is an epic post. I wish we have a post-of-the-month feature. This would be it and some.

Awesome!! Congrats man! To me that would feel better than killing any fish myself. I hope my daughter is as ambitious about spearing and hunting as your son. Congrats again guys!
