shore diving NC

Hey all I'm a new resident to NC living outside of Raleigh. I'm hoping to get out to the coast to try some spearing. Are there any fish to kill close to shore? I'm pretty new to the sport and could use any advice you're willing to give me. I've currently got a 90cm make railgun and gonna need to purchase some other new gear. Any good dive shops in the area?

Re: shore diving NC

Welcome. There are a couple of dive shops in Nags Head, Manteo and Hatteras but my advice is to get it before you come if you head this way. They may have something you need but it may not be what you really want. Go see what Dano has at MAKO, he usually comes down a couple time a year to dive with us and carries good stuff with great service. The shipping is really quick even with standard. As for fish it just depends on what time of year and the weather. Around here it is really dependant on wind direction and strength. For shore diving up here its mostly wrecks piers or bridges in 10-40'. Some usual suspects you may find are tog, triggers, sheepshead, bluefish, spanish, spades, flounder, rock, cobia or AJ. A 90cm is great for shorediving here you can use it in 3' to 40' vis and is easy to shoot in a hole. I have 2 an RA and Mako.

Let me know if your thinking of heading this way, I may be able to help you out.
