New to Portland, Maine (and the ocean!)
Hi,
I'm new to Maine (Portland), freediving/spearfishing and this site... I took my first dive (with a wetsuit anyways - what a difference!) at Fort Williams last weekend and saw a pipefish for the first time in my life (hence my user name). I've made some equipment purchases, that although ok, were ill-informed and I don't want that to happen when I get a speargun. Any suggestions? I'm also training 5 times a week (pool and dryland-cardio + breathing and stretching) and would love to meet someone that would want to train hard with me. Glad to be part of this forum and look forward to learning a lot about the sport. |

Drive to NH and I'll bring you to shoot some bass. I'd be happy to talk spearguns with you too. PM me your phone number.

Re: New to Portland, Maine (and the ocean!)
Hi Pipefish,
welcome. I noticed that you put emphasis on "training hard". It is a very good idea to get yourself in good physical condition when playing in the ocean. A large portion of good freediving however is mostly about the opposite of exertion. Relaxation is really the key, where less is more. Less kicking, less moving, less fighting the water, which uses up your valuable oxygen. Slow everything down so that you melt into water. It will add to your bottom time and will not spook the fish. Happy hunting |
