I saw a few legal bugs and it ended up being a great dive, spent an hour in the water and grabbed a limit of very good sized rock crab which was great as they are my girlfriends favorite eating thing in the world!

Nice haul of crabs, I ate rock crab omelet for breakfast and crab fried rice and cocktails for dinner. Did you actually limit and take 35? thats a lot of little legs to clean.

Im hoping to make a bug/crab dive this week too. It sure takes the sting out of chasing short bugs and holed up legals to come home with a bunch of shellfish.

What does cleaning the crabs entail? Do you scrape meat out of the body or just boil/steam them and then pop the claws and legs?

I take all the meat from the body and legs. The thread cited below has instructions for cleaning crabs. Its pretty much the same for all species. We should go sink that banks board of yours with a limit of crabs and I'll show you how its done

Sounds good to me. The other night while I was getting skunked bug diving I saw so many rock crabs that I could've grabbed 5 or 6 on one breath. After that I resolved to try a few on my next dive.

I'm up in Los Osos right now but I'll give you a call when I get back in town.

JUST BE CAREFUL They are nasty, aggressive muthas. Personally, I would not want to carry them in my NHT bag, even with something like Jeremy's "codpiece"

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Yeah, they are much stouter and stronger than the other crabs per their size. I worry about my digits more with rock crabs than any other for sure. I've even considered caring a finer small net bag for their claws so I could have the option of breaking one off to aid in getting them in the NHT. Ive carried quiet a few in the bag at a time; keep fingers and the like clear of the net for sure... The cod piece works great.

Ive put them in the bag with some fish and had my catch torn to pieces.

All these were in my bag next to my sack for the whole dive...

Re: Santa Barbara Conditions Report "Perma-Thread"

Refugio was pretty dead yesterday....saw no bugs the whole time. Then at the end of my dive (was dark at that point) I managed to grab the only one I saw, then right after I managed to knife a just legal halibut....got it right in the gills, and planted to the ground until I grabbed the knife on the other side and brought it up....my brother freaked when he saw me at the surface with it.

First time ever knifing anything underwater.

Coming home on Friday for the weekend. Hopefully conditions remain decent and I can grab a few bugs at some point

That is bad ass! I've gone on dives and left my spear in the car because i was primarily out looking for bugs not wanting to deal with the spear the whole time with the prospect of knifing a halibut if i saw one. Have yet to see one and have that chance but I can't wait to join that club! where did you see the halibut? where do they chill?

Nice! I've knifed cabezon and hand-grabbed big rockfish, but for whatever reason I don't even SEE halibut. I mean ever. I have not seen a halibut in two years+

Ling cod, another story, thankfully... :-)
