All About Pole Spears & Slings What is it about that traditional method of the early hunter/gatherers under the water? These devices are indeed interesting and effective.

Getting into this "polespear thing" and looking for advice.

A couple weeks ago I purchased a new Sea Stinger Lighting Rod with the SS2 tip. Mother Nature has not been so nice lately on my days off to run offshore to dive, so I just decieded I would go out on the flats near my house and practice by shooting sheephead, mango's and mullet. Well, I did shoot one 19" sheephead and one 14" mango . . .then a stud of a sheepie was under a ledge and I stuck him. Just like in the "carp video", it swam off with my new tip . . .the cable stayed on the shaft :# ! ! ! That was the end of that day. I go down to my local dive shop (which here in Homosassa, Fl we don't have ANY properly stocked shops for spearfishing . . .mainly manatee watching! # and buy a JBL paralyzer tip and head back out. I wasn't too impressed with how this thing held a fish at all! I did take home one sheephead and two mullet, but I bet I lost 50 mullet, and shots were in the body behind the head with full pass through of the barbs, and the things would fight off the spear. So, with that, my question is ; [i][i]Who has the best paralyzer tips out there or best holding power and slip tips that do not cost $100 like the ones I have for my spearguns ? ? ? Any advice for this newbie polesrearer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

After the first 20 i would have just thrown it into the water. Try using a flopper tip, never failed me

The Crist slip-tip is $65 so that might be a way to go if you still want a slip tip. I concur with SpearsouthFL though that a single or double flopper might be a better choice money wise.

Get the replacement SS1 tip for the Sea Stinger and crimp the back of the wire. And make sure the tip itself is screwed on tight throughout the day. I landed a 25lb AJ with that set up, and a few nice grouper in the Bahamas.
I hate 3 prongs also. I prefer a thin flopper tip that is well tuned. I like the Riffe in 9/32" and the Lance OHara which is even thinner at the tip.

Read this thread http://spearboard.com/showthread.php?t=135645 especially post #12.

If you are still not satisfied, see if this will work for you http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-16-8mm-x-2...#ht_500wt_1413

Dean can make them to any length you want, so if 24" is too long and has too much mass, you can go to 18" or 12".
