Today, the Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, Tony Burke, released the final Commonwealth Marine Reserves Network proposals for the South-west, North-west, North, Coral Sea and Temperate East Marine Regions.

Damn that is very extensive. And I bet each of those closure zones have the best fishing in their respective area.

Re: Proposed Commonwealth Marine Reserves Network
Thanks for postin' Tony. Now that is sad. I hope they fight like hell. Apparently, the closure eliminates ~99% of diveable water less than ~15m deep in some networks!
I hope that it's not too late...Aussie posted this (thanks buddy) video in the Cali' section - a knowledgeable & passionate spearo speaking against the proposed closures in Aus': Last edited by steepNdeep; 08-03-2012 at 12:51 AM. |

Brilliant speech! It is so awful and sad that recreational fishermen have been villainized and he explains that quite well.
This is exactly what we dealt with...interesting that Australia is going through it too...why are multiple nations deciding that sustainable harvest doesn't work? Massive MPAs are not necessary! I hope everyone listens to his speech, especially US politicians.
