You could rent a scuba suit at a number of places if worse comes to worse. Not as flexable and you will need more weight but it will be a lot better than the shortie.

Yours are probably either leaky and/or bad socks/gloves, or you just get cold easily. A good, sealing, 3 to 5mm sock and glove combo shouldn't give you any problems, at least for a few hours in Nor/Cen California (mid-40's). Granted, it is subjective to an individual's tolerance.

I am ihe water for three hours, those socks get cold after an hour or two. For abalone diving just getting a limit it doesnt matter because you are in and done in 15 minutes.
