Hank, just wondering, did you take Daryls course?

I solved the problem by crowd sourcing the money for the class. That is, I went spearing, took what I could, crabs, fish, urchins, everything I had in the freezer etc... and threw a fish party for my friends and family, and had enough for some of them to take some fish home with them. Explain to them how you put your life at risk every time you dive and you want to do it safer by taking a class. A few fish-party weekends, and my tip jar was quickly filled. I'm taking the class this weekend. Good luck
GREAT JOB!! I'm super happy all worked out! That's what I call getting creative!

Re: Tips on going deeper?

Definitely go through an FII level 1 course.... going deeper and shooting bigger fish is not worth if you cannot develop a way to do it safely every time....
The fish Party Idea is great... BTW

Re: Tips on going deeper?

made first improvement after a tip from a seasoned spearo. I previously could only hold my breath for 1 minute, but after he suggested that i blow out all of the air in my lunges before inhaling new air to hold my breath, that tip now has me holding my breath for over 2 minutes. Are there any other simple suggestions i could put into practice before needing to attend a FII class? thanks

While your on the surface, take a deep breath using your diaphragm. pause for 2 seconds, Exhale slowly for 8-10 seconds, pause for 2 seconds, then repeat. This slows your heart rate and conserves oxygen, leading to a better breath hold and a deeper dive.

Just be sure to do it with a buddy waiting on the surface. (like we all do
But seriously, it is way safer.

Tony, no I didn't take Daryl's course other than his "dive boot camp" when going out on his boat a few times.

Re: Tips on going deeper?
