Keys spearing

I have a house in matecumbe key but never really go spearfishing when I'm down there. I was wondering if anyone knew of some general area where I can go out of here and some basic rules for spearing in the keys. 40-45 is my limit so anything in that area or shallower is perfect. Thank you guys any input is appreciated.

Re: Keys spearing

stay three miles offshore from the nearest land. stay south of molasses reef. islands count as land (stay three miles off). when you get to mile marker 63 you can spear anywhere. but the laws get tricky when it comes to spearfishing under bridges so i suggest calling the fwc office out of marathon. they will give you extensive rules and regs for all of the keys.

Be careful of richardkeyz. Anyone who lives in Islamorada and spells it islandmorada is ...................

INCORRECT
Above Long Key --- You must be 3 miles from land. But it is not that easy. In some places it is substantially more because the 3 mile line is drawn from up off Key Largo (Rodriguez Key I believe) to Long key in a straight line (more or less). 3 miles from land means 3 miles from ANY object above water at mean low tide.
Best way to stay out of trouble is buy a chart (Teals, Top Spot)

You can looks up dive spots online and get coordinates or you can drive a boat out towards the reef about 3-5 miles and when you see dark colors (reef) jump in and take a look.

And people always say I pronounce islamorada weird because I say it like Im speaking Spanish. eezla-more-ah-da
