Island Fever....really?

I have so many People telling me at work today that I shouldnt go to Hawaii because I might get Island fever. Pfff are you kidding me!!! I had to post something here because it blows my mind how many people get the so called Island fever. For me I just dont see how this can happen. heres why...

1. I Love surfing been doing it since I was 10 years old and Hawaii (Oahu) is the surfing capital of the world.

2.I absolutely love the Ocean, so much so that I went to school to be a commercial diver ya that much!

3. I love spearfishing, Hawaii + awesome fish + clear visibility+ Warm water = paradise!!!

4. I love the out doors I love hiking I love scenery, waterfalls, Nature.

5. I RARELY travel more than 20 miles in a day. Why would I need so much more space than Oahu has to offer??? my life seriously revolves in a 30 mile radius.

6.I love Hawaiian food Mmmm Kalua pork.

7. I love the Hawaiian culture and rich history.

8. I make good money and will make equally good money in Hawaii.

9. I have family on Maui.

10. Humidity doesn't bother me, mosquito's don't like my blood, I love to eat shark, Coconut, macadamia nut and mango's are some of my favorite foods, I like to hunt pig, I like to eat pig, oh ya did I mention I LOVE the ocean!!!!

OK you get the point I think I could keep going but I might get annoying, Maybe im just different? I feel like I was born to live in a place like Hawaii, I cant imagine I will get bored or sick of perfect waves and crystal clear water. So from my prospective I just cant understand the whole Island fever thing.

I am honestly not that worried about "the Fever" biggest thing to me is I will miss my family but I will still see them. Bummer you couldnt stay, thats the thing there is lots of low paying jobs in the tourist industry but landing a well paying job isnt easy. I seriously feel like I won the lottery to have the Job I will have out there. Im actually going to be paid more than I am here, plus I think income tax is cheaper there than cali. although price of living is a little higher but Southern Cali is pricy too! Hopefully if I am able to buy a home I will build a small guest house in the back yard and rent it out to Spearos at a discounted rate.

Good for you. Island fever is bs. Like you said, how often do you go outside a 20 mile radius living anywhere?
I lived on Oahu for 5 years and Kauai for 4. Kicked my self in the ass a few times for leaving Kauai....but the Philippines, Malaysia and Belize aren't bad places to live either.

Be sure to watch the movie North Shore before you go to brush up on Hawaiian culture!

Come on Aaron. I'm trying to convince the wife that since she's going to Chicago in Sept, it's a good idea for me to go to Hawaii in July...

She's not interested in Hawaii and I'm not interested in Chicago. We'll come to Belize together next year.

Re: Island Fever....really?

The folks I've known who have experienced island fever relate that it's like claustrophobia. It's not that they feel the need to travel great distances, it's the knowledge that they're on an island and can't.
Sounds to me like a head game some folks inadvertantly play on themselves, but it doesn't sound like you're gonna be one of those folks!
Ron.

Re: Island Fever....really?

Dude, I'm in the same boat as you. Eeryone warned against island fever. Simple solution, if I'm sick of bing ON the island, then I will get OFF it by going spearfishing! There are some awsome hikes and other stuff to do as well. I did the Pill box run yesterday afternoon. Killer steep, but killer view from the top of the ridgeline of Lanikai and Kailua.
