First Dive for Stripers in Arkansas

The Arkansas spearfishing season opened 6/15 and I've been waiting all winter to go.

Opening season I dove Bull Shoals lake and shot some nice Walleye. However, I have been hearing about how good the vis is on Beaver Lake this year and I been anxious to see for myself.

Today, I met with my young spearo friend, Dusty and we launched our boat at about 9:00 AM.

The vis was incredible - I have not seen the lake this clear for years. We had 20 to 30 feet above the thermocline and more below the murk layer. We were freediving in the range of 30 to 45 feet. After hitting some of my favorite spots we were coming up empty and only saw small Stripers.

On our last spot we found them! I saw a nice fish approximately 20 feet away and I took the shot with my 55" CFM Wong. The fish rolled and I grabbed her at about 42 feet deep. This is the longest shot I have made on a Striper in this lake due to normally having less vis and using a smaller gun.

If the lake stays this clear I may have to break out my Super Magnum

My dive partner shot his fish about an hour later. After high fives, and a few pictures, we headed home. Doesn't get much better inland!!

Two pics included

Midnight,

I don't know if you had a Freudian slip, but you mispelled Stripers.

Incredible fish again Les. Sure is nice when you can use a bigger gun in freshwater. Nice shooting.

Nice take! I've been meaning to get down to Bull Shoals and spear some fish.

Looking forward to posting my own stripper reports soon...

Nice job Les!

Was that bigger than the white sea bass you shot on my boat?

Re: First Dive for Stripers in Arkansas

I dove bull shoals last weekend I could not find clear water to save my life. I was there with two other boats and between 5 divers we only shot 12 blue cats and one walleye vis was maybe 2-6 feet no fun.

Way to go Les! You should put on your old wetsuit and glasses, like in your catfish pics!

Dive safe buddy

I don't remember. Wasn't my WSB about 61 pounds?

No wait - that one might have been your's!

That was a great day Les, hopefully we are still on for Friday. I should have my bands on my new gun and I can put the pink cannon aside.
