Destin,Pensacola,PCB or OrangeBeach?
Which area would you consider to have the best diving within about five miles of the inlet for spearing and possibly a bug? I realize lobster are scarce that close to shallow water.
I have a 17 ft boat and prefer to keep closer to port if possible.

Well, I can't speak to Destin/PCB but the odds of finding bugs within 5 miles of Pensacola or OB are as close to zero as you can humanly imagine. Probably your best bet would be Destin and run East or PCB and run West. There's lot's of Natural Bottom between PCB and Destin.. Just don't know how far out it is.

Re: Destin,Pensacola,PCB or OrangeBeach?
For the next week or two I'd avoid both areas.
Both have shovel nose bugs sparsely distributed on natural bottoms. Spiney's are right scarce until bottoms are over 120', way out of range of small boat diving.

What about just spearing? Forget bugs. It will probably be Sept/Oct time frame.

Destin has several decent size patches of natural bottom within 5 miles which hold slippers, and good reef fish. You can pretty much bet on getting investigated by a Bull or two. For some reason, they seem to frequent the natural bottom there more often than wrecks (in my experience).
