You have to be 3 miles out up there. I went to Marathon for that reason. Anything above Duck Key is off limits in state waters.

Drive down to Marathon or further south. There are local guys on here that can help out...

Its where the long key bridge starts on the east side so you can spear 200 yards off the bridge some good spots there with a good tide

Re: Help! Spearfishing key largo/islamorada

When I spoke with FWC, they said there is a "line" out from Long Key and you have to know which side you are on to be legal. They simply recommended to spear west of the bridge to be safe. They were not willing to say that 1/2 way down the bridge was OK to spear... So, not being local, I wasn't willing to chance it...

South of rodriguez key is considered tavernier/the end of pennekamp and you have to be 3 miles offshore until you get south of long key. Anything north of that is illegal unless you are out 6 miles or 300ft deep I believe. Obviously stay out of SPA's.

Yup..need to be south of Molasses Reef and 3 miles off shore..drifted up over the line this weekend but the FWC guy was very professional and cut me a break. OTW its a $500 fine per speargun and a court appearance.

Ouch! I'd be out of luck then, considering I usually bring 3 polespears, 2 guns, 2 slings!

Oh yes. Between my daughter, her boyfriend and I, we had 7 guns on the boat..2 of them were pricey blue water guns and he could have confiscated all of them besides a fine.

You can run north from key largo to the North border of Pennekamp. Once you pass marker #24 in hawks channel youre out of Pennekamp but still have to be 3 miles out. Theres some good natural reefs and artificial (ships) within a few miles of this area. Wish you good hunting
