Too much shaft overhang

Hey guys,

I just completed my first gun build. A 55 inch mid-handled, enclosed track gun, made with zebra wood on the outsides and a strip of purple heart down the center.
I don't know what I was on when I measured for my shaft length, but I ordered a 65" mori shaft from neptonics. After I got my wong slip tip on it, my shaft sticks out the end of the muzzle 19 inches. Is this too long, do I need to send it back? BTW, its a 9/32 shaft.

I would post pictures but I haven't figured that out yet.

Dusty

Re: Too much shaft overhang

That would be way too much overhang for me. In my Wong 55" mid handled gun, I use a 55" shaft, and with the slip tip I have about 9.5." All my guns have roughly that amount of over hang.

The 55 is the one on the left.

Re: Too much shaft overhang

mid handles should have 8" to 10" inches overhang including the tip . yours is way too long especially since it is a thin shaft

Re: Too much shaft overhang

Thanks Phil,

I will get it taken care of, soon. First of all, I have a trip planned tomorrow and I plan on using it. Is there any reason why I shouldn't use it with that much overhang?

Re: Too much shaft overhang

Since were on the subject of shafts. i was wondering if the Wong 55in GR only shoots 9/32 or can it shoot a 19/64 or even a 5/16?

Also how would a Magnum shoot with a 19/64 thick shaft? i don't quite understand how it would fit in the enclosed track part of the gun (i never owned a gun that had a enclosed track)

if you plan on returning the shaft then yes otherwise the gun will fire but will fell different with that much overhang.

I really don't know whether the thicker shafts would fit in the track of a GR, but why do it anyway? Daryl built the gun to shoot a 9/32". He probably knew what he was doing. It works great with a 9/32". Even if the thicker shaft would go into the track, the gun would have more recoil and accuracy might suffer.

The track of a magnum is cut for a 5/16" shaft, so a 19/64" would fit. I use a 9/32" shaft in my 57.5" magnum though.

Re: Too much shaft overhang

Took my gun out for a test run. Shot a 10 pound drum just fine, but then my line release would not lock back. It would go into the back position but it did not have enough to lock in. I moved it to the other pin setting (deeper setting for wider guns) and it was too deep for the shaft to lock in. Should I grind it down a little?

Re: Too much shaft overhang

And, whats the best way to get a line release pin out? I got it out yesterday by driving the mech up from the bottom but I didn't feel this was the proper way.
