I am a spear guide for Palapas Ventana in Southern BAJA and have the pleasure of getting to be in the water all the time! Up until now the fishing has been on again and off again on Cerralvo Island. Since mid may the water has been green and a bit cooler. This cooler green water has been great for yelloytail...We have also consitantly landed huge amberjack and plenty of pargo on the reefs.

Australias Ray Powell led a trip for three friends (Rich, Alby and Emanuelle) and they had amazing success fishing for cubera snapper, pargo mullato, yellowtail, and amberjack. Each day they had filled the fish bag by the early afternoon. They are the first clients I have worked for that put on a spearfishing clinic for me! A humbling experience. One of the most knowledgable, outgoing, badass group of spearfishermen I have met. Their ability to read the water and bait with uncanny accuracy prove that even in murkey/bad conditions you can still be successful (despite what many other people think). After Ray and his group departed, the water slowly started to warm up. I started to hear more and more about wahoo. These stories sparked some serious anxiety...

We had a group of three guys from the states come out recently. They have been fishing with Palapas Ventana for over 6 years. They Come out in June specifically to shoot wahoo (all other fish are bonus). The water has been doing its best to cooperate...but after 5 days of searching for wahoo and seeing nothing the guys were pretty discouraged. On their last day the current picked up, the water boosted up to the low to mid 80s, and our spots were stacked with clouds of cocineros, toros and milkfish. With the conditions finally setting up nicely, they shot two wahoo and were...you guessed it...STOKED!

The next day I shot a wahoo at a spot off of the south end of Cerralvo! It wasnt huge...more of a weehoo. It is an addicting experience. It is evident why so many people freak out about wahoo. They are a challenge to locate, shoot, and land...a rewarding process to complete. All of this and they are amazing to eat (sashimi drizzled with sesame oil and lime is my favorite)!

Now that the water is warmer and clearer...It is going to be difficult to get out!

I have included a few pictures of the fish that Ray and his friends shot during their trip to Palapas Ventana. Any comments welcome! I have only been fishing for 5 five years and am like a sponge...and I love to hear other peoples fish stories!

How far are you from Todos Santos? I fly out Aug 4th for a 10 day blue water and reef trip for my birthday. I have yet to shoot a monster cubera.. Birthday wish this year.

We are not far. Hour and a half to two hour drive. The cubera spots on the island are stacked right now. Every trip we are seeing a bunch of fish in the 25-60lbs range. It is kind of silly actually. I shot these two the other day in under an hour of work. We saw fish on every dive down. The visibility has also been really good--top to bottom vis (65 ft) which makes it easy for locating the fish from the surface but a bit harder to get close to them. It has been super fun fishing for them! If you come out I will be your guide.

Email contact@palapasventana.com or by phone at 310.594.DIVE or at 011-52-612-114-0198. Email works the best.

Both. Lately they have been out and about and will retreat to the rocks when approached. Some fish are deeper (80+) and some are shallower (40 ft), just depends on the spot. Super fun hunting them...they are a challenge for sure.

We have a lot of parrot fish. Both bumphead and bicolors. I agree, they are super good eating! Happy hunting!

Ha! Everyone asks. I have never had a problem with it. I have had the good fortune of always having a mask that fits my face perfectly! Although if it ever became an issue it would come off!
