Rmoses

Hey All, New to the board, I'm looking for fellow spearos that dive the moses area. I'm in Babylon and had recently taken up spearfishing. Reviewed old posts on the area without definitive do's/dont's. Thought maybe someone might want company. Kevin

Re: Rmoses

be careful diving shiny.my buddy got a ticket there last week.we where on the northeast side where you park in the fenced area.some boaters called the cops and they called the bay constable.i was alraedy out but he got my bud coming out.seems the inlet extends all the way a.round to the rocks that jut out by the end of the parking fence and you can onlt dive east of there.wrote him for no dive flag ,$50.if he wrote him for diving in the inlet $250

Re: Rmoses

at shinni on the back east side there is a green bouy off the rocks a ways i always wonder about bouys like that the channel i feel is like 40 ft off the bouy not from the bouy to the beach
what if the bouy is 400 yards off the beach and its green so from there to the beach is the channel idk about that but i stay close to the rocks there ;
we gotta find the laws on that how for off the bouys is the channel to me it is not all the way to the land
i have tryed to find how wide a boating channel is years ago could not find the answer
one time years ago a coasty told us we could not dive anywere as far as you could see
some are new and are from ohio
but the shinni bay constable is very quick to write i wish some of the laws were easyily to read and find
i wounder if you guys had a flag would he still write yas
there are sighns at shinni no diving in the fare way is this golf
well i would like to know is the channel off a buoy as wide as it to land on one side and depending on the color you should be out of the channel on one side of it logicaly
guys with the constant bickering with the fisherman who are over board at times we need to have our flags with us
and these guys need to be charged with calling cops for no reason
if we called the coastys or cops every time we almost got run down by a boat or a jetski there would be a lot of calls

also we need to bring our flags guys i never used to years ago but with the miserable fisherman on patrol and the constant miserable loud mouth i bring one
times have changed people dont mind there own biz and they run there mouths threatin ya then call the cops on you when there alligator mouth gets ther little buzzard azz in trouble

during times like this we need to know the rules and try to follow them
wow some guy went fishing and was so miserable he called the cops on you but he was happy that you got a ticket and probably smiled as he went home with no fish and drank his bud lite wow
do ya see why

make me want to call the cops when they fish off bridges and drop fish from the top or when they are drinking on the boat or when they have shorts in a bucket or they leave there bottles at the beach
but i wont i mind my biz damn ..maybe i should not

sorry fellas for the rant
how wide is a channell please
thanks Dave

Re: Rmoses

bro depending on where you are depends on where and how wide the channel is. I have my 1600 ton masters license so i know the rules of the road as well as navigation laws. a channel is marked by buoys(red and green). anything outside those buoys is not a "channel" even if its a navigable water way or not (depending on the depth of water). there are alot of grey areas, especially with bay constables and coasties that think bc they have guns can tell people what they want. true in sum cases but false in many others. just be safe out there

Re: Rmoses

Last fall some coasties rolled up on LIFishslayer and I while we were both in the boat in between dives along the east cut. They asked how we were doing and I think we had a tog or 2..
They said cool, good luck and motored away. Like 2 minutes later they Bay Constable rolls up and makes the diver get out of the water and ties up to us and starts up with the regs speech. We were very polite and informed them about our visit earlier and then explained we weren't sure of the exact "legal spearfishing area" but the Coast Guard seemed to think we were okay. They looked at each other and untied the boat, it was AWESOME to watch them motor away with their tails between their legs..
Many of the "rules of the road" regarding where we can spearfish are subject to interpretation so in my experience I've found it much more pleasant to share the waters with everyone else by communicating with fisherman from the water before dropping down near them. Find a lure? throw it up to them and wish them luck. Play the game or expect to loose even more places to dive, I know I don't want more restrictions

Re: Rmoses

sorry tough to explain
there are bouys all over the bay they are 8th of a mile to half mile apart usualy running east to west they could be a few hundred yards off the beach
on the back of shinni on east side there is a green bouy same as moriches well
a boat would pass that bouy on his north side heading east well on south side there is a few hundred yard to the beach
there is not two to mark the width of the channel
so is the channel now all the way to the beach
most bouys are single and you pass on one side were dos the channel end
i could tell a ton of storys one out by robert moses the bay constable said we could not dive any were in the great south bay cause there were bouys in the bay' that was years ago
i have never been ticketed on the water period and almost never get ticketed out of the water
but some bay constables have always had it out for divers \

pretty bad when every day there is a new boater storys and fatalitys and never is there divers or freedivers involved but we seem to be harrassed the most
i been playing the game its just tough when ya not gaining any thing by playing nice and they harrass you in every way possible
