Spearfishing In Ireland

Hi to everybody!

I'm planning to go for a week to Ireland, possibly in the Kerry-Cork area and would like to pass most of my time spearfishing.

So far it was absolutely impossible to know how the situation is there.
It was easier to get information from a 100 inhabitants island than Ireland...

Do you know anything?

I'd like to go there very much but I think I will have to renounce....

let me ask you something...

I was discussing with friends that are on diving in sharm el sheik and sudan, red sea, and they talked about spearfishing with the risk of the shark around like something not so absurd....

what is your experience, since you're written from califonria and florida?

how can you find the relaxation and concentration to freedive, thinking that sharks can be around?

maybe, there are areas where an encounter with them is almost impossible or you have a sort of behaviour to prevent a possible aggression etc....

I really cannot figure how it is... but then I think.... if there are so many people that spearfish in those countries, a valid system must exist ....

We see them (Bulls) all the time here in Florida when we freedive and scuba. You get used to them. The smaller ones are easy to back down by charging them and poking them with your spear tip as son as you see them. They learn you are not something to be trifled with and leave, or they get pissed off and you get out of the water. Either way odds are they are just checking you out and following the stimulation that tells them a wounded fish/ potential meal is around. If a shark gets hurt in the wild it becomes a less efficient hunter and may starve to death before it heals, so they only take safe easy meals. By charging them early on you establish yourself as something of an obstacle of an easy meal (your fish).

Dispatch all wounded fish quickly, blood in the water is not as big a deal as the thrashing and shaking. A drawn out fight with a fish or one that is struggling on a stringer is a very loud dinner bell.

If the sharks in question are larger than than you with fins on it becomes a crap shoot as to weather or not you will be able to back them down.

Basically, don't worry about them.... but have a firm plan in mind in case they show up. Thats how we do it in my part of Florida at least.

in my dreams (nightmares???? ) I figured out that I would have gone directly to the shark, once seen, in order to let him understand I wasn't an easy one....

Spazio, I'm in Roma for a few days. I don't mean to hijack this thread, but do you know of any dive or spear shops around here? Since the Euro is higher than the dollar I probably wont find any deals, ma non si sa mai. I've been to Ireland, and it is a beautiful island and the people are great. You'll love it even if the spearing is bad. Divertiti!!
