Re: installing a fishfinder on a kayak
I have a portable Hummingbird unit that has a portable transom mount for the transducer. I use it with my 14 foot RIB when we are diving in the Bahamas and it works great. Two 6v dry cell batteries last for about 40 to 50 hours of run time.

This is my boss' site www.gwck.com he recommends Marine goop. I think there is a link on his site to a article on installing a fish finder. Also check out norcal kayak anglers.

Re: installing a fishfinder on a kayak
if you look at the ocean kayak PROWLER,,,,,they recommend a hummingbird that comes with transducers that go in your scupper holes. they use a small battery covered in a garbage bag{so it doesnt get wet} and put it in the front hatch....The only thing i have againt it is if u get seaweed on the transducer. Then u cant see a damn thing

Re: installing a fishfinder on a kayak
My buddy has one in a watch. There is a remote float that he ties to the back of the yak. He said it works well.

Re: installing a fishfinder on a kayak
I have mines mounted with epoxy. Mix some epoxy and heat it up good with hair dryer. This gets some of the bubbles out and makes it flow better. Build up a little rectangle out of duct tape like a fence to hold in the epoxy to keep it from running all over the hull. Sand the hull a little so the epoxy grabs better. Pour it in the rectangle and wait a while for it to get less viscous then push the transducer on it. May want to put a weight on it as well. I use a battery I got from an electronics store. I use mines for seeing the bottom not fish finding. If there is good bottom there probably are good fish.
Look up the consumption of the of the unit in amps, divide by 12 then multiply by the number of hours you want to run it. Then add about one more. Get a 12v battery with that rating. For example your looking at 12W max power consumption. Run it for 4 hours you need a about a 5-7AH battery like this one. http://www.garrett-smarthome.com/pro...rod=ELKELK1250. Then just seal it in a waterproof container or a bag.

Re: installing a fishfinder on a kayak
I will try and take some pics of my install. I have a Huminbird 595c GPS/Fishfinder on my Ocean Kayak Zest 2 EXP. Works great with the standard transducer. I used GOOP and set the transducer in the hull in a puddle of GOOP and the hull is thin enough to not effect the signal.

http://www.gwkc.com/ I use a inline 8AA battery pack from radio shack(couple bucks). Batteries are rechargable rated 2300 Mah each. I can get 2-3(+/-20hrs) trips on a charge with a small eagle FF. Sometimes I'll carry a backup 8pack. Keep it sealed in a small 3''x3'' tupperware container. Marine gooped transducer(no bubbles) no probs even under desert heat. Mine is like the pic below but square.
