Re: Backpacking and Spearfishing the World

First shore dive in Corsica: saw a 45-50 kg bluefin tuna in an underwater grassland, about 14 meters depth. Totally surprised and under-gunned.

Nobody is going to believe this and I don't care

Re: Backpacking and Spearfishing the World

Update: I've been on a couple more dives but have not been to any deep rocky places, so haven't really found success. I saw one nice dentex on my last dive but it was shallow and he was not coming in. The vis has fallen considerably in the last three days due to very strong winds. Took a break from diving yesterday and went hiking up in the mountains. Incredible scenery! Hopefully I can get photos on the blog soon.

Just watched that video. Crazy! However, he did take a terrible shot on that fish, was bound to be bad from the beginning. I'll make sure only to take a kill shot

Re: Backpacking and Spearfishing the World

Just got back from a dive in a better spot. Saw two good dentex but it was 25 meters and they took forever to come in. When they finally got near, the closest one turned at about 8-9 meters just out of range. Bass-turds! And i was totally submerged in the grass-no way he saw my eyes. Not very safe diving conditions...

Re: Backpacking and Spearfishing the World

I went for a dive today and saw quite a few dentex, a bonito chasing three mini almaco jacks, and a rather large queenfish-looking jack species. All just out of range. The diving here is challenging to say the least. I think finding the right hunting grounds is paramount - lots of rocky cover would be nice instead of the acres of grass I'm currently hunting.

Dentex in corsica?
high season there in june++ and oct/ nov (fish observed all the year)
best spots off Cap corse, Girolatta island if you'r staying in the north of corsica
depends of the thermocline at about 25/30meters
best time of the day is just after sunrise and before sunset
best spot located in front of a cape: bottom should be rocky with big stones in strong current and close to seaweed fields
a 110/ 120cm gun + reel works better
pretty hard to get close while staying in ambush:dentex is a clever/ distrustful predator. Staying quite hidden in the grass works sometimes better than behind a rock
Sometimes the fish may visit you by swimming to your back (curiosity++)
Only one time visit: release and catch!
As soon as you observe the pectoral fins of the dentex shaking, it will take off in a split of second...
In my modest opinion dentex has some common behaviors with the cubera!

Re: Backpacking and Spearfishing the World

Got him. Early bird gets the dentex. It took a bit of work but perseverance paid off. Hopefully I've found the winning formula and success continues.
