Humboldt

Went over to Humboldt for the weekend and brought dive gear despite the rough ocean. Saturday eve the winds calmed down so my wife and I headed out around 7:30 AM on Sunday. Got to the location but couldnt see the water due to fog so we fiddled around for a bit hoping for fog to clear before hiking down. Around 8:30 said screw it and headed down the trail. The water was dirty close in, but around 100 yards or so out there was about 5-7 feet of vis depending on your location. Anyhow probably my 3rd or 4th dive a ling swam right up inderneath me and just as he swam out of sight I pulled the trigger. He was hit far back and I didnt want him to tear off so I went up for a quick breath and back down and stuck him in the head! Sweet !! First fish on my self made gun is a lingcod. I was super happy!! About 4 dives later another ling was just sitting right in front of me, it was a bit smaller so I let it go thinking there was going to be lings everywhere.. Anyhow didnt see any more lings saw a few perch and a few fish that took off to fast for me to ID and missed a black rockfish. The winds began to pick up around 10 and the vis went to crap so we headed in and had a fun day. Wife had fun to and was excited to see fish on the spear. Now I have to convince her that she can load a gun (she thinks shes to weak) then I can build her a pink one.

Way to Go! Homemade Rocks! You did good! Have you ever tried going for Halibut in August at the entrance of Tomales on an incoming tide?

Tomale Bay? Isnt that in So.Cal??? I was diving in Humboldt county which is about an hour from the Oregon boarder. There is halibut here but I have not looked for them yet.

You're crazy if you do!! Right in the middle of the Red Triangle?
I dove there once..... once. My first ever ab dive was out the mouth at Bird Rock, and then we tanked up for hali inside the Bay. I'll never dive there again. The viz was 3-5' and I had a creepy feeling that I was being stalked by "the man in the grey suit" the whole time I was in the water.

There's plenty of safer places in California.....

If your wife doesn't want that pink gun, I'll take it.

Re: Humboldt

That is a very cool gun & congrats on the fish. If you ever sell them I'm in the market for something similar. Semi mid handle for rockfish & lingcod.

Re: Humboldt

Tomales Bay is ten miles south of Bodega Bay. Sure it's in the red triangle. That never bothered me as much as the sea lions patroling the entrance.and the rip current. As long as you catch it at the very begining of an incoming tide stay 20ft or less and trow your catch into a float or boat. You'll limit in 15 minutes! August only!
