Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Last week we headed south of Pasco and did 100 miles on the boat and it was pretty snotty and encountered gumbo. So we decided yesterday to just head due west off Pasco. 50 feet was the magic number. Vertical and horizontal viz was great most of the day.

AND we encountered dolphins - got some great video.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Off AMI yesterday, went out 7 miles to 40 ft vis hazy and snotty ttb, then to 3 miles 35 ft vis hazy ttb no snot. Pretty fishy, saw some fatty gags just begging to be shot, got 3 22" mangos, some hogs and had a cobia rip out. Good day overall lots of bait and fish around!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Got out Tuesday 6/9

60 mi west of Clearwater pass

Red grouper, ARS, Porgies, AJ's, bee-lines,

On NO bottom at all. Just in the desert weird.

Mostly hook and line.

DID dive a wreck in 150ft. water vis was 70ft +-

clear* a lot of current

mid water shooting a buddy was able to add a Permit and African Pomp

to the cooler*

SAW a shooter sized wahoo in range but we weren't loaded up and he only gave us one real shot at him.

ALL in all -dreamy trip.

Flat seas* 50 mph transit no wind
limited out on everything

Re: Current Vis - Homosassa Sun 14 2015

30' to 35' off Homosassa, strong current in the afternoon, 10 t 15 foot vis. Went to 5 spots found fish on two. Some nice hogs and mangos plus a 12.75 red grouper. Also a sheepy and a mackerel. Rough going out in the morning, nice ride back in. Had big gags following us on most spots.

Freediving Out of placida today to 12 miles/60 ft. Vis was 8-10 ft of hazy nastiness. Moved in to 30ft and Vis was maybe 10 ft, snotty and hazy. Day was pretty much a bust, got a couple snapper for dinner but altogether a pretty dissapointing day. But, that's spearfishing for yah!! Anyone have any luck?

Damn that sounds horrible. We are going to plan on running out to some wrecks in 130-150 next weekend and look for pelagics...if the vis looks good in 70' may stop there and look. Hopefully it cleans up.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

10 miles out off Egmont Key, dove some nice ledges. Horizontal viz was about 20' with a lot of particulate floating in the water. Tons of mangroves - although most of them some how managed to elude the tip of my spear. Didn't see many shootable size hogs unfortunately. One or two, decent gags, taunting me off in the distance. Unfortunately the cooler came back with a lot of space left in it. Only managed about 5 fish today, still a nice day out on the water.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Started in 35' north of Tarpon yesterday. Vis was 15-20 horizontal with gags everywhere and some baby hogs. Moved a few miles SW to 45' and the water turned a dark olive green with 10-15' of vis. Finished in 30' off Clearwater with 10' vis but finally found some nice hogs and red grouper. It should be a great year for gags come July 1st!

I agree with the Gags. One of my top Gag and Mangrove spots seems unaffected by the red tide. We normally like to go west to NW of Anclote.

Do you normally fish off Tarpon? Have you found you need to go south to get the Hogs? I haven't been out spearing but once this year and our spot dynamics have changed greatly.
