Goatfish/Red Mullet Anyone spear it??

Yeah guys I've eaten them. I traveled a good part of the world as a captain and when you do that you end up trying a lot of different cuisine as it is always great to learn other fishermans/cultures ways...well not always.

Diverlen is right in that I do see a trend of spearoes trying to ad weird shit to their game list I think out of frustration from the current regs and availabilities/difficulty spearing of targeted species.

Goatfish are definitely no delicacy and what does that mean/validate anyway...? In China they think eating tiger DIkks is a "delicacy". I don't really like goatfish and they have such ridiculously small boney fillets it's not worth it to me. The worst fish I've ever eaten so far has to be the margate. Jack crevalle are pretty bad and margate...well that falls under hunting with one eye and a sharp stick. Taste is an individual thing. Maybe my taste buds are outcasts? My stance on you guys killing the above mentioned fish is simple. As long as you follow the regs happy spearing. If it ever comes to me hunting goatfish, spadefish or jacks I'll leave my Riffe topside and bring down a camera rig.

Spadefish, Goatfish, Grunts, Cuda, Blue Runner, Horse Eye Jack, small to medium Crevalle.....when the pickings are slim on the "prized" fish all of the above come home to my dinner table when I spearfish.

Are they good to eat?.....if they taste good to you then they are good to eat. Need group validation of that?....Why? Spearfish for your own satisfaction. I am glad many others think the above mentioned fish suck....maybe they don't know how to cook fish any other way than covering them in batter and frying them......who cares?....'mo fish 'fo me biooootch!

Enjoy your time afield and harvest within the rules. Continue to share your thoughts about 'alternative' species and answer those with genuine interest in the tips you pass on. Ignore the elitist rants of eco-nuts and species snobs. Simply refrain from answering them....they are only vamping your chi brother.

I like my goatfish scaled, scored, covered in a very light layer of corn starch and deep fried whole. I then serve it with a thai spicy basil sauce made from scratch or a spicy ponzu. I eat the fins as well....texture is like a potato chip.

Iv'e tried it once and it came out pretty good. Leave the head in the soup and it tastes just like c-lamb chowder !!
