Trivia from Bob Ballew's Log 1/16
divers may need to be more cautious diving near the big Humbolt squid this year..the first batch is now off the Nine Bank near San Diego and are bigger than last year, with most running 40 to 60 pounds; there is volume of our favorite wsb size squid off the Isthmus, which probably means there are still yellowtail off Ship Rock and some wsb around; still squid and some wsb being caught by skiff fishermen by the east end light at Catalina; bonita still off the front side from Avalon to Long Point and some big halibut and large sandbass off Torrance beach and the Long Beach breakwater areas...still slow but starting to shape up... 1/17....looks like the local squid boats are currently working out in front of the Huntington Beach pier..
My boat trips are free...it is the advice I charge for.. Last edited by Bob Ballew; 01-17-2008 at 11:54 PM. |

Re: Trivia from Bob Ballew's Log 1/16
I saw a report somewhere about the larger size class of the humboldts this year a little earlier. Damn, a wolf pack of 40-60 lb Humboldts is something I don't ever want to see while diving.
Thanks for the notes Bob.

Yes, I know I'll probably be strung up saying this, that we don't understand science and unintended consequences when messing with nature...
But I've seen the stomach content of these squids. If they move onto a reef, count on them cleaning out all the reef fish. As far as I'm concerned, they are an invasive species and they deserve an unmerciful death over a hot fire, basted in teriyaki sauce. Save our fish boys--go get them (this may be the only time you may see me with a fishing rod in my hand). |

Spearboard squidfishin trip? Maybe we can get a group discount. It's pretty fun to blast your friends with ink when you pull 'em out of the water (I hear) They taste excellent just about any way you cook them. Unfortunatly, since it's hard to ice/clean them quick on party boats they lose a little bit, but in that case they also make great chum - chop em up and freeze em in baggies. |

Re: Trivia from Bob Ballew's Log 1/16
Joe may be right.
These large squid may not technically be invasive, but there's a growing body of evidence indicating that their populations have historically been kept in check by predator populations of sharks, billfish and tunas. As the stocks of these predators have been reduced significantly, the squid stocks have ballooned. Another possibility is that the squid's range has shifted/expanded with changes in other ocean conditions. It's unlikely that divers could have a significant impact on the squid stocks. But if you do go hunting for them, be careful, and know how to process your catch properly so it doesn't go to waste. Watch your fingers! |

The slaughter of sharks is definitely a part of the squid proliferation imho.

Re: Trivia from Bob Ballew's Log 1/16
Only crazy people do that. FWIW: I agree with Chris - I think the proliferation of Humboldts outside of their historical range is due to overfishing of shark and billfish populations. I also believe that certian fish stocks that usually range out in deeper water have been pushed up into shallow waters the last few years due to the need to escape the squid invading their normal range. As they move into areas where there are greater numbers of humans, I see it as only a mtter of time before an encounter goes way south for a diver or swimmer. |

Re: Trivia from Bob Ballew's Log 1/16
I think you are pushing the edge on this size of squid..if a couple latch onto your legs and start tugging, your next stop could be at 200'..however, if I was going to do it, I would wear a Co2 instant inlflate vest to gain some buoyancy should they decide to gang up on you...they show a certain amount of intelligence, will move as an organized group and looking a big one in the eye underwater while free diving, is a very eerie experience...

When I said spearboard trip I was talking R&R - figure we could get more that way, plus suck down a few oat sodas and talk story.
