Gray Sturgeon in PV?

Hey Guys,

I think I saw what I believe was a Gray Sturgeon while PV diving this weekend. Is that even possible I didn't know they were in the area.

Thanks,

-Rob

I don’t know about a grey sturgeon, but the white and green sturgeon range from Alaska to northern Baja.
Very cool that you saw one, how big?

Re: Gray Sturgeon in PV?

I was sitting at around 8 feet hovering and saw what I thought was a 2-3 foot smoothhound shark on the bottom cruising through some eel grass. It had the same flat side fins as a shark and sort of cruised like one but as I dove down on it and got the side profile it was definitely a fish and had a little notch on it's nose like a little box, it was grayish. Any help ID'ing said fish would be appreciated.

Check out the photo link below. Could you see a line of bony scutes along the flank of the fish? That would be the key to knowing if it were a sturgeon in my experience.

Re: Gray Sturgeon in PV?

Definitely not a guitarfish, have seen tons of those, so far it looks the most like mike W's link. I know the local fish well and I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like this. I'm not pro or anything obviously but

1. flat front fins
2. all gray/dark blue (no diamond pattern
3. little boxy shape on its nose
4. swam like a small smooothhound from the surface
5. 2-3 feet

Re: Gray Sturgeon in PV?

I'd say white sturgeon, but then again, without the diamond shapes on its back, it's most likely a juvi shark of somekind
