Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Might be worth looking at the water tomorrow. 4-5ft is the Cdip forecast, I think the water will still be pretty brown from the swell and rain though. Brown and chaotic was how it looked at Shell today.
The extended forecast looks pretty terrible all the way through Sunday.

Its not looking good for the abalone opener up North either. Anyone planning on heading up there for the opener? I am looking at the 14th weekend. Hope we don't take that much of a beating.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Got in today for a couple dives. There was some swell out of the West and a moderate surge. The wind was out of the south all day and less than 10kts. Had 20-25ft vis at one spot, 30-40ft vis at the other. It is a bit warmer in the water; I had 55 degrees on my computer. Both dives were near Lion Rk. Probably was clear a short paddle from Spooners.
Saw a lot of fish, including some young rockfish from last years crop (olives, B/Y, Grass). Saw a few nice calicos, some sheepies, and the standard CC fare. Nice day on the water. Did no fishing or photography today. Just a work day.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Went out in the Spooners area this morning--vis was great, top to bottom in many shallow spots, 20+ in deeper areas. Swell picked up as the afternoon came, however.

Dove yesterday as well--windy, lots of swell rolling through, and ~6ft vis.

Shot my ling limit, a few cabs (including a 23"er), and enjoyed seeing the cold-water fish.

Nice fish, that cabbie must have had a head like a volleyball. There have been a lot of lings swimming around this year. Has anyone else noticed the sharp incline of the kelp greenling population? I used to see 1-2 kg's on a dive, now they are everywhere.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

I went salmon fishing for the opener this weekend. Water was 49degrees, green, but quite clear out deep. Not a lot of bait in the water, and not much on the meter. Saw a few nice fish arches, and a few pockets of bait up at the top, and some clouds at the bottom. Looks like spring is still on the upswing, and production is still going up. Plenty of cold, nutrient rich water. Should make for a productive summer.

Pulled up a few salmon up to 29inches on the boat. One was full of cancer crab megalops, the other two had empty guts. Another swell on the way, so we gotta get fish where we can.

Yea the greenlings seem to be everywhere between avila and morro. I saw more of them than rockfish the other day at MDO.

Yep. It's the one at the PG and E center on Ontario, right? Work likes it when I go to that meeting, and I missed it last year due to an abalone trip.

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

Great article about the SLO County S&R Conference by Patrick Smith. Pat drove from Huntington Beach in the rain to attend the conference. He had to drive back to HB immediately after the conference.

Some of you may recall his book "Shipwrecks of the Southern California Coast." Perhaps Soon there will be a "Shipwrecks of the Central California Coast."

Here are his comments:

It is a pity so many of you tigers missed the conference...

Re: SLO Dive Conditions

I am glad I made it. Too bad I did not get my copy of his book signed.

I like how they have some of the same lecturers every year at this event, but the topics are different. So start thinking about topics to suggest for next years discussions.
