I've always taken the eye piece and firmer meat. Yes, IMO, it's a complete waste not to. You just need to rinse the meat well. Anyone that will eat a whole live oyster should have no problem with such. I can't stand wasting meat myself.
What do you CA guys do with the whole Abolone?

I've always eaten whole oysters, clams and mussels. I'm going to experiment with recipes using the scallop body in a delicate sauce. Maybe a veloute sauce.
