Re: First time spearfishing
Just looking at mendocino on google earth makes me jealous... but then i check the local water temp and go back to loving middle florida lol.
I'm not a pro on how the water works out that way on the big blue but i would say the most dangerous part of shore diving is the rip currents. Make sure its not sucking you out because after a good couple hours of swimming a strong rip can kill easily. Locals will know what the water is doing so if one says not to swim in a certain area or at a certain time of day then i would follow his heed. As for not being able to see what is lurking under you, its entirely mental, you don't have fins, a lateral line, ampullae of lorenzini, you cant see like them, you cant smell like them, you cant hear like them and you cant move like them. We may have a brain and thumbs but we don't have millions of years of raw evolution, hunting and killing in the oceans purely to survive. I'm no prey item but i do respect the most efficient killing machines in the ocean, if the best way to kill in the water was a monkey and a spear then the ocean would be full of them but its not, its full of sharks, because thats what worked so thats what survived. On the other hand i hear you guys don't run into the suits like we do over here so if the locals say don't worry about it then i wouldn't. Take pictures for us flat landers and have fun. ![]() EDIT:: Just now looked at the dates... This kid is probably dead, sucked out to see by a 20 knot rip or swallowed whole by a 50 foot gws... Why else would one not return to spearboard after trying it for the first time??

Re: First time spearfishing
I often get questioned if I am worried about sharks when spearing, my reply is always the same...when I am down there I can either spearfish and enjoy the dive or I can watch out for sharks, I can't do both. I am not saying I am bla·sé while underwater but I do not fixate on watching for sharks. Let's face it if one really wants us I don't think there is much we could do about it.
