Amberjack almost kills me! Sharks and Barracuda too
Spearfishing on the Chevron reef, I shot a wounded amberjack. My fatal error is that I thought he was almost dead...I underestimated him and we got tangled up, tangling my hose and pulling out my regulator at 100 feet deep. Also there's some video of me playing with sharks at the YDT-14.

Respect the reef donkey.

After watching this would you have done something different? It looked pretty much dead as hell or very close to it.

Billybob taught me to always grab amberjack by the lips.

Re: Amberjack almost kills me! Sharks and Barracuda too
Good vid.
Grabbing the throat works a bit better, but I have subdued a few by filling it's mouth with my arm to cut down water flow. Hard on the arm and suit, but works in a pinch. Once you have the throat, squeezing hard immediately cuts off blood flow to the brain, giving it a temporary attitude adjustment until you can cut the throat between the base of the gill plate and the heart. This gives even the nastiest ones a permanent attitude adjustment since they'll bleed out in about 10 seconds once the cut is made. Better yet is to just brain them with the shaft in the first place.

Been spearfishing around here a long time. A lot of the cases where someone got messed up while scuba diving involved an Amberjack. I personally know of individuals that shot a jack out in the open, and it shortly took them to the bottom. Problem was that the bottom was more than 70ft past the recreational scuba limit (if its still 130') and these individuals were just recently certified. I also personally know of 1 fatality from shooting a jack, tangling, loss of air supply etc. Everyone has advice, so here's mine; Always try for a good disabling shot Never shoot a big anything out in the open where the bottom is deeper than you can dive. Have something to hold onto or wrap the cable around. (This does not apply to freedivers with reels and float lines) Try to gain leverage by wrapping the fish, let him tire (if you have time), get your hand on the thin part of his throat, and stab him in the head with a very sharp small thin knife, scratch awl, kill spike, etc. NEVER Never never stick your hand, arm, anything attached to your body down his throat, and out his gills, or in his gills and out his mouth. He will clamp down, and it is difficult to retrieve your arm. Especially while he is flailing about and knock's your regulator out of your mouth. Now you need that free hand, but unfortunately its stuck down a fishes mouth. Spearguns are replaceable. You have an excellent dive buddy. He did a fantastic job. He was "Johnny on the spot" to help you out, and knew exactly what to do. He had your back, and that's the most important thing you can have down there. Be safe and good hunting, KC Try |

Both A.J and cobia have the same habit of playing dead and coming back to life at inopportune times! Always brain them regardless. You need to buy your dive buddy a beer!

Re: Amberjack almost kills me! Sharks and Barracuda too
TRUTH! My first AJ almost killed me and a buddy - he and I both shot different ones near each other, and they proceeded to, in an almost practiced dance number, almost wrap us both up with each other's lines. We were fast enough and cognizant enough to barely pull our legs out of the lines in time. Mine dragged me all over creation and eventually pulled off the shaft. I've learned now to immediately reload a freeshaft right after the first hits and be ready to shoot him again if need-be. My cobia I recently got had a line shaft in him, and it took me 3 freeshaft shots (first two bounced off his head) to partially subdue him, but he still dragged me 50 feet up to the surface and was still fighting as we got him in the boat.

Ah, that must have been your advice about women, not amberjack
