Managing Coiled Mono on Replacements Shafts?

Hey guys. I'm sure one of you has this all figured out so here goes: for your rigged replacement shafts what do you do with the mono in terms of securing it so it doesn't end up tangling everything else in the gun bag? Tape, velcro, reusable cable ties?

I dont normally have my shafts rigged, I rig them as I need to. In the past I have rigged them and then put them in ziplock bags to keep the tangle at a minimum.

Cut a 1" piece of PVC pipe the length of your spare spear. Glue a cap on one end and a male threaded fitting on the other. Coil the line in a large diameter near the flopper end of the spear. Insert spear tail end first holding onto the coil of line. Fold the coil of line and shove it down into the tube. Screw on a threaded cap - no more tangles and just remember the pointy end is coming out first

Note: If you put the barb in first, it can hang up during extraction ...

Re: Managing Coiled Mono on Replacements Shafts?

I use the following technique:
Start wrapping the mono in a coil at the end where it is crimped to the shaft. Wrap about half the line in an approx. 6"-8" diameter coil.
After about half of the mono is wrapped, start threading the remainder in and around the coil, following the same diameter.
This takes a minute of so, but it does help form a very stable coil of mono which can be managed easier without the coil falling apart.
No cable ties or tape required.

Be careful out there.

Mike.

Re: Managing Coiled Mono on Replacements Shafts?

There's another advanced technique.. still requires a little Electrical tape. There's a few variations on the materials. Essentially you are creating a holding point in or on your tip protector. Can be as simple as a Slice in a piece of old band material. Or you can use a piece of old band material with a piece of string in a loop tied around it as your tip protector and then loop that string over the protector to hold your mono loops. On the other end the mono gets wrapped around your sharkfins. The whole thing gets a few Electrical tape wraps along the length of the shaft. This is good for example if you are keeping your shafts entirely in a pipe..
